it will also come on if you earth the wire that connects to the thermo switch,but only if the ignition is on.

yeah, did that to test if the fan is functional at all and it is. although doesn't come on when the temp is high and the ignition is on (engine off)
i decided this must be the switch and ordered a new one...

Hey!
Replaced the lower rad temp sensor/switch and guess what? The bike is not overheating anymore!!!!
I'm getting closer to getting the bike fully working. I just need a top rad cap in good nick and possibly the temperature sender (the one sitting in the thermostat)
