Re: Bike running like a bag of shit
I Had a problem like this not long ago but it wasn't just the engine but everything, the cause was a dodgy fuse socket other than that i dont know i hate the electrics on the nc30

Re: Bike running like a bag of shit
when you check what the charge rate is and if it is a little low or suspect, remove the block connector by your right knee like cmsmj1 says and check what the voltage output of the alternator is............
to do this you will need to turn the multimeter to ac volts and whilst the bike is started and @5000rpm take three seperate readings from the terminals within the connector........
the readings shouls all be at least 50v and above or all the same....if different or below 50 volts the alternator is goosed

Re: Bike running like a bag of shit
Thanks guys! CMSMJ1 i like the idea of it being the alternator because that is easy enough to replace, i just hope it's not something to complicated and something that will take ages to find. I had a word with my dad and he agreed and said it is probably the alternator. He could fix it for me no matter what it was but he said he's helped me for long enough with my bikes and i have to maintain it and fix any problems for myself!
I will do what you said asap CMSMJ1, i think my dad's got a multimeter if not i'll use my mates one.
Thanks again!

Re: Bike running like a bag of shit
I've checked the resistance and it all seemed fine so i don't think the problem lies there, maybe it's something else thats part of the alternator thats the problem? My mate came round and we cleaned up a couple of earths and i went out on it quick to see if that made any difference, but unfortunately it didn't. I think it might be time to take it somewhere, i don't want to be charged an arm n a leg though!

Re: Bike running like a bag of shit
Where you at? I get the feeling that this is going to be something easy to fix and you might need ot supply some tea and biscuits to a friendly 400gb'er to come and help!
You need to check the wiring and connectors all the way from the generator, through the engine V and into thewhite block by the right knee, then back up the bike and across to the reg rec.
If any of these wires are blackened, charred or look nasty then try to clean it as much as you can.
check the plug caps are on, the plugs are in good looking condition and that your battery is fully charged. Try to get a spare battery and try it.
When your bike is running crap - get a multimeter on the terminals and see what charge is in it. if it is flatter than it shouldl be then you are looking to sort your charging out.
With it running at 5k revs what does the voltage at the battery read? Does it rise with revs?

Re: Bike running like a bag of shit
CMSMJ1, I'm in Fleet, Hampshire. The voltage on tick over is 15v and when i upped the revs to 5k the voltage didn't rise it stayed at 15v's. When i turned the lights on, the voltage dropped by about 2.5 volts. My dad seems to think that 15v's is ample but he doesn't know a great deal about electrics. As for spark plugs, there fine, it definitely seems to be an electrical fault because when it's running crap and i've got the lights on i turn them off and it runs fine.

15v on tickover is too high> your battery is going to be killed IMO

do you mean 12.5volts?
15 volts at idle does seem a little high.....the manual says 13.5-15 volts @5000rpm is about right.
on the other hand though, the fact your reading stays the same whilst the bike is reved to 5000rpm couold be a very well working reg rec.....especially if your battery is partially drained and it is supplying extra voltage to charge it whilst the bike is idling.........
my main concern is the voltage whilst using lights,im not entirely sure if 12.5 is normal but i believe it possibly is.so long as the battery is getting more than 12 volts of power it will charge

What i mean is, when i was measuring the voltage the lights were off, so i tried switching them on to see if it made any difference and from 15v's it came down 2.5vs so it was now reading 12.5vs.
Cheers.

Re: Bike running like a bag of shit
i never noticed the dropped by 2.5volts.....sorry!!!!!
i would maybe visually check all connections to see if there is any signs of arcing, any burning etc!!!!
what made you check the charge rate?
