Update on this - changed the oil and filter, run for a tank of fuel...problem persists. Identified that there are instances where it doesn't affect it - less likely to do this when it is cold and idling at 1500 or above - the idle is a little up and down when warm which could explain that - do others experience a temporary drop in revs when putting the bike into first gear from neutral?

your clutch sounds knackered.

regarldess of what you said about biting point, have you took it apart and checked its all within specifications? this includes clutchcable adjustment

Checked clutch cable/adjustment, it's right in the middle and plenty adjustment either way...as you say, i think only thing left is to pull apart the clutch...problem being is finding a good one to replace it with!!!

you can buy new steel and new friction plates for the clutch no troubles.
