Re: help
hi evil took casing of this aft bearing still in situ,i can see how shaft for starter motor fits in it,and have relocated it into engine,,the other cog to the right of it came off when i took the casing off ,along with said shaft,it dosen,t appear to have anything holding it on, unless it stays put when casing goes back on ,is it free floating so to speak? ,i also got both dowels out without breaking them so thankyou for your patience with me and your help always very much appreciated, regards mark.

Re: help

The intermediate gears (2 and 3 ) locate on shafts (4) that fit into the crankcase and the starter cover.
The bearing (10) is identical on all models.
Do not force the cover on at refit. sometimes it takes a little jiggling of gears and case.
It is not unknown for the starter shaft (1) to be forced into the motor damaging it.
Ensure the bearing is seated fully home in the new casing or the casing wont seal and gears will bind.
If it has suffered damage sever enough to totally destroy the casing;ensure no debris has invaded the crankcases.
Tales are legion of racers who remove engine sump plate to check this after high speed spills force gravel into the crank.
A red box doth not a Snap On make.

Re: help
Youre looking from the engine in that diagram, the casing supports the dowels and houses the bearing.

Re: help
A little tip on removing these dowels, willandrip wrote:Yep;same part.
Get a new gasket too.
Be aware the locating dowels are made from tinfoil.if swapping them over.
Find yourself a bolt or better still a drill bit that fits nicely inside the dowel,Then grip the dowel with a molegrips,
Twist and pull,Out comes the dowel without being crushed..

Re: help
I am pretty sure I have an intact, with bearing, starter cover in my shed. Will look tomorow. I know it will be black and slightly scabby but it is a 3TJ item, not a 600 one. PM me your address.
It's a leftover from my build.

Re: help
If you want it to be silver, mask off the bearing, use some paint stripper and then spray it with 5 Wheels Silver.
