Re: Whole engine powder coating??
I was going to recommend PJ1 black engine enamel, good paint, easy to do, no need to prime anything and it comes out lovely if you take your time.lukemillar wrote:The last pic of the black heads is mine and that isn't powdercoated either! It is VHT engine enamel and all the parts were hot tank prior to painting. The engine enamel gave some nice results except around any fastener which chipped the paint when the fastener was torqued down. Apart from that, it looks pretty good!
The key with any painting technique is prep and masking (especially with as many mating surfaces as an engine block) and from my experience with powdercoating wheels, the masking was fair more challenging than with paint.

If I see stu tomorrow I'll take some pix of his tractor engine (Harley Ferguson) which has a lovely powder coated finish.
I used some PJ1 on my FJ engine and whilst the finish is not as good as the engines and the previous page it was more than acceptable.

Re: Whole engine powder coating??
Apologies for the post in error - just pictures I have collected along the way, as thinking material for the future.
The only person I know that has 'done' an engine in one lump was Timon (look though his build thread(s) where he de-greased it all (very thoroughly) then masked of all the various holes and shafts and sprayed it as a single lump.
[Edit] - Page 6 of this thread for Timon's engine respray viewtopic.php?f=62&t=33406&start=50

No worries, NGneer! I'm actually kind of flattered that you thought my paint job pic worthy of saving!

There's a place on the Rainford industrial estate that does ultrasonic cleaning/blasting especially motorbikes as they bring classics
Back to new. It's Infront of MW racing. Guys that run it are sound. They do ask for your engine to be ready split etc but will do that for extra.
I fancied it on my old NC24 but the paint came up nice enough with a good degrease and polish.
The beauty of ultrasonic is that it's non-abrasive :)
Google them
