Poor starting is invariably carb orientated or valve clearances.
Had the Exup valve still been in situ ; I may have said yes,
an easy test would be to constrict the silencer outlet;basically that is what the valve does just it is placed prior to the can,
It probably would be worse until you reset the carbs if you are convinced they have been tampered with.
more than likely blocked air jet(s).Mixture is about 3>3.5 turns out.
Strip the carbs in pairs, not all 4 at once,it is very easy to transpose (mix-up) jets on these.
Does it run once started and have you ridden it yet. ?
I believe a mph reading is required > will depend how fussy the tester is !

thanks will. best to just leave it till I have the time to strip it properly.
most of the fasteners in the engine/airbox are either stripped, rounded off or rusted up so it pretty obvious somebody 'had a go' at it
it started before, eventually, and rode ok, power seemed a little lacking and tended to hold on to the revs but ok.

however, Mrs Baldy's Lexmoto Vixen (snigger) runs and rides like a dream, and that was a proper state when I bought it for her bday back in april. blown engine, loads of missing bolts, £200. on a 10 plate. I know what the ladies like ;)

Valve clearances !.
If it runs ok ish but is bad to start.
Borrow a GOOD compression tester once you get the plugs out-- see how it all goes tits up-- with poor previous maintenance.
Did I say GOOD KNOWN compression tester....... read Mangs 20 page epic that started with good compression on a faulty tester.

A speedo isn't a requirement at all.

Terrible starting ? If it runs OK once its going then its probably tight valves.

Just been doing a bit digging about on the speedo issue.
Construction and use regs 1984;
1984 >Vehicle requires a working speedo readable in both mph and kph.
Pre 1937 not required.not a retrofit requirement pre 1984

This would mean any vehicle coming in for its initial registration in uk as an import would require one after 1984.
This is /was actually done on many 4x4 imports I have purchased at first UK registration.
I believe VOSA engineer checked this along with foglight fitment and brake light height and reflectors, or a recognised MOT testing station.

However it is not a legal requirement for the annual roadworthiness certificate> MOT, for one to be fitted never mind working. and there is no check box for it (fail or advisory) on the computerised form. There is however a box to be filled in or left blank for the actual odometer reading. The tester must record what is shown on the instrument if fitted or on the label if it is taped over. He cannot remove the label/tape if applied.

Some have stated failure /advisory for no instrument (this must have been pre-computerised link as no box on new system),some have had test abandoned at that stage and most= no comment and pass certificate issued odometer box left blank.

Obviously one may dispute testers decision on this if he /she is a G.O.C. but then you then need to find another test station for future use.

So yet another complicated law in the Uk that is neither use nor ornament.
And as for restrictions/reductions applied on insurance policies re. milage;Christ how would you explain to the office wallah you had no speedo nor even required one for the MOT,

Personally ;for the amount of camera vans and Gatso gizzmos out there who think they deserve your cash more than you do, then a working mph speedo is mandatory.

Right, I'm hoping to (re)start the work on this tonight.
Can anyone recommend anywhere to get the valve shims from quickly?
(not having a garage means the bike will be in bits on the patio. With 4 cats, 3 dogs,5 kids and a mother inlaw with a 'tidying' OCD)

There's usually some on ebay, but the ones you need are never there !!!

You can get them at a yamaha parts place or wemoto etc, chances are you'll need about £30 worth once you've moved the others around. Get some of those food boxes you get from a takeaway. White / red nail varnish to mark the TDC on the Ex / Inlet cam wheels and cam chain

Sorry to interject on this thread but I can't stress enough the importance of a good compression tester I have thrown away two relatively expensive ones and now use a calibrated borrowed one from my mate. The ones I had both gave false positives that lead me to investigate anything but lack of compression.
