Re: Rear shock
Its a water drain pipe for the cup.
And yes.. the 89 shock is shit compared to the later shock.
If your only pondering to the shops and what not then no doubt it will be fine, but if you plan on pushing the bike at all then consider upgrading it.
You can bolt the later shock on and it will all look nice and only the well known will know it isnt an 89 shock, if you can get an overhualed one then go for that for cheap good upgrade.
If not then there are plenty of decent other shocks for the bike
The front forks on the 89 dont have the brass scrwe in the middle, do you hve this? They suck real bad too compared to later forks...

Re: Rear shock
Just had a look and they have brass screws in the top of the front forks.
The seals are leaking so i was going to check the spring lenghts, new seals, new fork oil and a good clean up

Bike isnt stock 89 then so I wouldnt worry about keeping it original.Triplespeed wrote:Just had a look and they have brass screws in the top of the front forks.

only 1990 onwards have the brass screws in the forks and only 89 bikes have the rear shock without the resevoir.
What paint scheme is it?

Re: Rear shock
Only the seat panels, nose cone and rear light tee piece remain of the original fairings but they match the tank being the type 1 blue, red and white paint scheme. To be honest thats what lead my thinking that it was a true 89 but hey ho.Neosophist wrote:Bike isnt stock 89 then so I wouldnt worry about keeping it original.Triplespeed wrote:Just had a look and they have brass screws in the top of the front forks.

Just got back in and the wife has bought me a rear shock with the reservoir so ill be using that when rebuild time come round.
Thank you for your help, i would never have known the front forks were from a later model otherwise

Many people often fit them as an upgrade. The early forks are damper rod, old style while the later ones are cartidge forks.
Ive had a rebuilt set of each infront of me and the early type feel like a pogo stick in comparission.
Anyhow, have a look at the sticker under the rear seat and let me know what it says, soon tell you what it was (based on the undertray of course)

Re: Rear shock
Sorry for the late reply. I have had a look at the rear mudguard and i have found the following:
Model: VFR400K
Colour: NH-196
code: NH196K
Any clues at to what the bike originally was?

Re: Rear shock
Excellent thank you. I will know what colour scheme to dress the bike in when it finally comes round to it.Cammo wrote:K model is the early 1989 model bike, nh196 is the red, white & blue colour scheme.Triplespeed wrote: I have had a look at the rear mudguard and i have found the following:

So it looks like someone down the list of owners has upgraded the forks which im not grumbling at.

Re: Rear shock
While in on the subject has anyone overhauled a rear shock and if so was it worth it or particulary difficult?

Re: Rear shock
The later type rear shock isn't a bad shock, if you can find a copmany to overhaul it for a decent price then it will make a world of difference to a tired old one.Triplespeed wrote:While in on the subject has anyone overhauled a rear shock and if so was it worth it or particulary difficult?
It depends on what you are going to be using the bike for, just for general use and for somone without MotoGP esq skills then the original shock in good condition shuold do just fine.
