The back torque limiter [slipper clutch] was slipping as it is supposed to do.
If you really need to remove the sprocket, then wrap a length of old chain around the sprocket and grip it in the vice, assuming you can get the motor on the bench or a work mate or similar, to roughly line up the vice with the sprocket.
