looks like im just going to buy a gear indicator

also how to check chain tension ?
Forget the gear indicator.

If the bikes neutral light isn't working it's only from a wire wire switch, its either the switch or bad connection (bad connection most likey)

With the bike in first rev the throttle a little as you shift up to neutral and it should go in fine

Hi,
Well, this is a problem i also used to have with my nc35.
There is no "one thing do" solution. I will tell you what i did and stay assured this will help a lot.

1st. OIL
After a lot of trial and error, the way to go is Motul 5100 10/40 SEMIsynthetic.
If you haven't had a recent oil change, do it.

2nd. Clutch Cable
If old, CLEAN (WD40 is doing a good job) and then lubricate properly. After this adjust as per honda general service manual or as per haynes manual.
If there are signs of wear, replace.

3rd. Front Srpoket Cover.
Lubricate with appropriate grease the following parts (Sorry, don't know their names in english so i will wright the parts for you):
22710-ml0-780
22852-ml0-780
91201-427-003

4th. Clutch disks/plates/springs (Try first all other options, leave this for last)
What i did was replace all of them (with new original honda parts), regardless of wear.

5fht.
Clean and lubricate properly the bracket that the clutch lever is bolted on. part no 53172-KT8-710

6th. Chain\Chain tension and sprokets.
Adjust chain tension if the chain is old. (As thunderace said before)
If there are signs of wear replace chain and sprokets

Again, what you read above is what i did and believe me, neutral goes in sweet as well as all the rest of the gears.

i find its just one of those things you get a 'nack' for. persistance and practice (any exscuse to ride it suits me) and you'll find a way that fits you.

fair play to alex basic mantanance is a given and it helps. but they are infamous for neutral niggles at first
and i agree if ther netral light isnt working chances are its a conection easy peasy! :D

Check the bulb in the back of the neutral light too.

I've never had a problem with my bike going in to neutral, I always pop it in to neutral when rolling up to lights so the revs are a bit higher than usual though. Are you sure it's not just because you're not used to the bike? Try to get it in to neutral with your hands, your hands are much better at this kind of thing.

I also had this problem when I first started riding however that was because i had a really badly worn clutch, after replacing the clutch friction plates with genuine honda parts and fresh oil, it slips into neutral nice and easy each and every time...

also check that you are clutching in fully? i noticed that alot of the time when i think ive pulled the clutch in fully i havent actually done so, theres still abit left... just a thought

Check the ignition switch. My GPZ has an intermittent neutral light, wriggling the key in the slot seems to sort it out.
Conventional wisdom says to know your limits. To know your limits you need to find them first. Finding your limits generally involves getting in over your head and hoping you live long enough to benefit from the experience. That's the fun part.

tighten your cable, check if its worn out though...
if you tighten the cable and then it keeps loosening by itself that is when the cable will snap very soon
:( it happend to me and im still waiting for my new cable
if in doubt replace the cable you dont want it to snap
