Yes, the starter motor needs to be renewed. I bought a used one from ebay to replace it while I fix the old one. Until then I use a small metal rod to tap the starter a few times before starting up the engine.

Hitting the starter motor to get it to work is a pretty tried and tested approach, check out the LMP cars in Le Mans being smacked with hammers to start them up. They do stop working completely after a while (sub 4 hours) so be careful you dont strand yourself!

Hehe, you were right Sasakura. Hitting on the starter motor stopped working after two weeks. No VFR for me until the 21th :[
