At 5000 rpm with lights on you should see 13-14 volts at the battery terminals. Start checking the charging system. Unplug the rect/reg and measure resistance between the three yellow wires, should see about one ohm, and infinite resistance between any yellow wire and the frame.

Thanks.
Should the bike be running to do this.
Thanks.

No, just connect the multimeter leads, with the multimeter set to 1 x ohms, to the yellow wires at the plug after you remove the plug from the rect/reg.

But I took the reg of & unpluged it & one of the yellow wires in the plug was looked like it was all burnt & the same on the pin on the reg were it plugs in.
Hope this makes sense.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
Rob.

Yes check the wiring from the alternator to the rect/reg. It all has to be in good condition, no burnt contacts, broken wire etc. Have you done the resistance check yet.

No not yet have to wait for my mate to come round with his mtr.
Could it be the pin in the conector block thats cousing the problem?
Thanks.

It will not help, perhaps but you still need to check the complete system. The resistance check on the three yellow wires will tell you if the is a problem with the alternator and its wiring. The other thing to check while waiting for your mate and hus meter is the alternator loom connector that is located in the V area above the crankcases. This connector and its three yellow wires can fail also.

How do you know it is the alternator?
