Don't do it 1st to 2nd.
You are right in that it feels like catching a neutral...as you are going through neutral.
Clutchless shifts have a use and that is basically when ragging it on a track. It sounds like you are having fun with your bike and learning about how they work adn riding in general.
Take the time to be sympathetic to your bike - it is old. If you want to use clutchless shifts then you'll usually be going as fast as you can - full throttle, slight lift and twat the gear in. Remember if you miss this gear you are going to bounce on the rev limiter and that sounds nasty.
You can do clutchless shifts downt he box too - but that is difficult and unless and until; you master blipping the throttle when using the clutch for down shifts then stay well away..
I would guess that in a couple of months the novelty of trying to do clutchless shifts at all opportunities will fade and you'll then be at the enxt stage - being smooth.....which is faster and nicer to the bike

I love the persistence when everyone was telling u not to try if u don't know how...that's why ur asking and trying!! so good on ya :)
I found this thread really helpful, I have really small hands and a weak wrist so after riding for a while i'm in pain so the boyf suggested clutchless gear changes on my nc30.
I couldn't do it cos it felt wrong and I didn't have the confidence to persist. he couldn't understand why I was struggling as he does it without thinking but then he has ridden since he was miniature!!
so now I know it's cos there's actual technique, not just a case of trying to ram it in!!
he reckons I should just work on my wrist strength

but now I may not need too....
good luck martin!!

There is a time and a place Jiggler...
A mate of mine used to struggle on trackdays until he got over his aversion to clutchless shifts. Doing them 2>3>4>5>6 is all good as long as you are giving it the berries.
Doing them slackly on half throttle at low rev is not quite what they are about.

Hi jiggly,
Forgot to say, for small hands have you tried adjustable levers?
Also, worth checking the lever slack is correct for oh, and the lever angles match the way you sit on the bike. Everyone is different, depending on size etc.
I got some titex ones fitted, and set to smallest setting, absolutely brilliant, after I adjusted the lever angles a bit to suit me
Cheers
