I was under the impression that you could fit an 8x6 (what I have) because it's the largest that will fit the standard gap, I recall it was something to do with not modifying the structure of the vehicle to fit it (the same reason japanese import cars are allowed to have the square plates, even though there are home market cars to take the parts from to make it legal, for example the Honda Civic EG6 hatchback, the numberplate section just unbolts so you COULD fit the uk part to make it take the legal size plate)

Fitting an illegally small number plate carries the same offence as no number plate at all so I'm lead to believe....

No it's worse, because one is done deliberately to pervert the course of justice and the other might have just fallen off.

Number plates have to conform to certain sizes and requirements if fitted to a motorcycle post 1st September 2001 irresespective of the age of the motorcycle.

Diving a motor vehicle on the public highway with a non-corforming number plate is punishable by the issue of a non-endorsable £60 fixed penalty notice. At the issuing officers discretion, the number plate can be removed and retained as evidence. A section 165 vehicle seizure notice may then be issued resulting in recovery and storage costs. If a vehicle is stopped not displaying a valid vehicle registration mark (no number plate in laymans terms) then a non-endorsable £30 fixed penalty notice may be issued. Again a section 165 vehicle seizure notice may accompany the FPN.

God that 'car dimension' plate looks aweful!

Bike plates should be rectangular.

Some police just don't seem to care, especially if the font is legible.

But as it is illegal, you always run the risk of running into a cop on specific number plate duty, or in a bad mood etc etc.
