Took it to a garage, he said the CDI unit wasn't connected properly so he soldered that, then told me the breaks were binding, the throttle was sticking and the brake lights needed replacing, so i told him to sort all that, and he put new pads on the front brakes. Then he told me the regulator had now cooked itself, so i was getting pretty worried about the cost at this point, i ask him how much so far and how much in total, he says its already at £450 and the regulator is going to be an extra £80. I now have to find the money for this when i thought it was just going to be a couple of hundred quid.

whoa...

Stop the wasting money at this garage!! You could buy another bike for £450!!

fuck me.

reg rec - £25 and fit it yourself.
brake pads - £40 and fit them yourself..
rear lights, takes 2 minutes and £2

Get a breakdown of the work, hours and parts.... you are being taken the piss out of

I've asked for one, final bill will be about £550 according to him, for not even a little of work, going to talk to him about it because i thought he was taking the piss, glad you agree.

What exactly have you had done?

List it on here.

You are best set to get your bike back now... Then argue the toss about the money after that as these things get messy.

£550 garage bill cannot be right..that is a mad amount of money to spend on a 15+yr old back that is probably not worth much over twice that....

Right, he picked the bike up from my house which was £40 straight away.
Soldered the wiring around the CDI unit.
Sorted the sticky throttle out.
Replaced brake lights.
Replaced front brake pads and seals.
Now replacing the regulator that was apparently fine when it went in.

That's it.

yeah it's a huge amount of money, it'e even older than that! I think it's 20 in September!

Right, he picked the bike up from my house which was £40 straight away.
Soldered the wiring around the CDI unit. << No parts, 1hr labour at most
Sorted the sticky throttle out. << No parts?? 30 mins at most, he will have lubed the cables....
Replaced brake lights. << cheap as chips bulbs. takes less 5 minutes.!!!
Replaced front brake pads and seals. << Pads £40 ish. Seals £? Not too much and labour - 2hrs maybe?
Now replacing the regulator that was apparently fine when it went in. << tell him to leave the reg rec, you can do that if you have at least one hand and basic motor control!!

That's it.

So - Labour - My local shop is £40 per hour.
1hrs (cdi) + 1hr (throttle, brake lights) +2hrs brake caliper service (check them! should be so clean and lovely..)

4hrs@ £40 = £160

Parts...well...less than £100 for brake pads, seals, throttle cables and brake lamps even at inflated prices...

So..you got £200 of bum raping from the garage...ouch

I reckon an invoice breakdown and a name and shame might be useful..that is shameful pricing.

If you claimed £500 on your insurance it would write the fucker off!
