Jonno, use this gearing calculator. You can find all of the info in the haynes manual that you need to put into it.

When I select RVF400 and make the custom gearing 14/38 the top table tells me in 1st gear at 12500 revs it will do 81.3kmh with stock gearing, 75.8 with -1 on the front. Does this mean with -1 on the front when the speedo reads 81.3 it will actually be doing 75.8?

Spot on.

I used to use a digital pushbike speedo (magnet and pickup on the front wheel) then you can change the gearing to your heart's content without worrying about speeding.

hmm I'll check out what my local push bike shop has Cammo.

But I might wait 5-6 more months to change the gearing, as my front sprocket looks pretty good and the red P plates on the back of my bike attract cops enough already. When my P plates turn green I might go -1 on the front ;)

Why wait? Police aren't going to know whether you've changed you gearing!
