Can you drop the oil and check it out? Take the sump off and check for shell in the strainer and the bits of crankshaft you can see?

I've had in my possesion 2 NCs with bottom end faliure and it is a clackety clackety knocking sound. Either yours is rattling really badly or I'd have to say the bottom end seems buggered.

Fixing it = more cash than buying a known working engine.

That sounds bad... it's hard to tell with the video and it being in a garage but if it just appeard and it's bottom end i'll go with mark and say it sounds like big end bearing failure. This kinda writes these engine off too

Providing oil is changed and there not wheelied too much they should run forever (well at least 80 / 90,000 km) so if it just happened and it is terminal it'd be interesting to know what caused it.. maybe blocked strainer / some crap in the engine?

Still.. on the brighter side it could always be something simple.. use an engine stethescope or a long screwdriver if you dont have the first and listen to the top end, then listen to the sump.

Before whipping the sump off, drain the oil through a very fine sieve.. see if any metallic particles are in there..

Then let me know where the noise is comming from :-)

All fixed, I went over to Rick's today as he kindly let me use his grinder, anyhoo we pulled of the clutch cover and after a quick inspection found three loose bolts rubbing against the cover, removed, cleaned and loctite put back together job done.
Great result me thinks

turned out well i think it was the three starter clutch gold coloured bolts, all undone/loose one that seemed the tightest was only finger tight, curt noticed that the engine case where the timing cover is has a SLIGHT scuff.

so it would suggest as to why i had that mechanical sound whilst starting that sometimes jammed the starter and engine.

i loctite all three and nipped them up to 28Nm of Torque!

just gonna see what a gasket costs, and then change oil filter, rag down any excess shite oil. also we a powerfull magnet into a rubber glove and thankfully no metal and i think to be honest ive been VERY lucky as i guess this could have seized and i would have lost the bike!

on a brighter note i started my winter strip down as a result and have loads of parts off for clean, paint or powder coat :)

Ah so it's loose bolts rather than bearing shells!

Good news I guess :)

A new clutch gasket is about £7.50

On a side note I can't remember the thread but I found an NC24 mudguard..

i have noticed that the oil pump chain is rather loose, i mean it wont come off the sprocket, but its loose none the less is this normal?
