The comment was mainly aimed at scooby, but i do agree that we need a more 'plentiful' supply of wheels and i think we all enjoy the challenge of making stuff work

well as Kayla says, the bike is a race/track bike with a 600 conversion and as i have access to a lot of 180 tyres compared to 160's it makes perfect sense, also a lot easier for wet tyre choice aswell.
nowt to do with money.
Kayla,make them up and see.

Okey dokey :)
It's not possible to get a Yamaha 5.5" wheel in the 3TJ swingarm, but you can fit the 5" wheel in there. If you wanted to use a 5.5" wheel you need to look at using a different swingarm (TRX850, Thunderace or YZF750 will all work. Don't use a Foxeye or Thundercat arm because they're steel and crap)
Ok, the parts I have are
YZF750 5.5" rear wheel/sprocket carrier/caliper & hanger/disc
TRX850 5" rear wheel/disc/sprocket carrier/caliper & hanger/disc
4DX frame
3TJ swingarm
TRX850 swingarm machined to fit the 3TJ/4DX frame
Thunderace swingarm (in my bike and not getting cut at any time soon!)
What will fit the 3TJ-
- 3TJ swingarm + TRX850/Foxeye 5" wheel
TRX850 swingarm + TRX/Foxeye wheel
TRX850 swingarm + YZF750 5.5" wheel
YZF750 or Thunderace swingarm + 5.5" wheel
It's a bit late now and I've got jobs on tomorrow but if I get time I'll assemble the 4DX frame with the TRX rear end parts to show you how it goes together.

If anything it's front wheels that are in short supply. When people crash the front is usually the wheel that takes the impact.
With the 5 wheel and a 180 profile you'll need to think how much that's going make the rolling dia ... you could end up with something bigger than a 150 x 18" combination.
if you can get 180's then why not sell or swap them for 160 part worns.

because i know the history of the 180's,storage,age,laps,cycles etc...
buying 180's to then sell,to then buy 160's seems a bit pointless to me.
if 5" wheels effect the profile of the 180's then i can go down the 5.5" if need be.
this 4/6 lark is all new to me so thats why i'm asking the questions.
not sure why the front wheel comment is relevant as it's the same 120/17/60-70 as most regarding tyre size.

Boris' comment is about front wheels, not tyres. As he said, most crashes involve the front end
I can't remember of the top of my head but there are fronts that you can use from others in the yamaha camp (foxeye 600, maybe TRX850......)?

Scooby - stick to the original size wheels and tyres on the 3TJ it handles really nicely.
The front wheel is common to the 600 foxeye and the TRX850
If you fit wider wheels then you might foul the chain meaning you'll need to space the font and rear sprokets which to be honest is to much hassle for what you might save.

like i said i'm new to this "little" bike malarky so just seeing whats available/easy to do/better upgrades.i need to get the suspension sorted before anything else and am scouring the net for a set of rrsp forks as the fronts have been re-sprung+oil but would ideally like a bit of tweaking option.got an r6 rear shock but is way to soft atm but am hoping once we've had a play with the settings it will be ok.
the awesome though, credit to my m8 that built it and was quite suprised how fast it is (and this after riding a BSB spec fireblade).
so any other tips/advice is more than welcome.
1 more thing, was the original wheel size 18"?

This thread has been talking 3TJ or 4DX for the official UK bike ??? They had 17" rear two paralever lights in a single trapezodoidal headlight
The earlier 1WG models all had 18" rears, they all have twin headlamps.

no idea lights wise as the bike was built purely for track but is a 3tj as far as i'm aware.
