Clean the carbs and the brake calipers .... I'm in a rush I'll explain it tomorrow

Take the carbs off the bike. clean the outside of the carbs with some cleaner / parrafin / petrol and layout a large sheet of white paper (so you can find and bits you might drop).
Take one of the carb tops and float bowls off at a time. Use a 1/4" ratchet and a bit that fits the screws press down hard and then move the ratchet. when the torque breaks don't unscrew but go to the next screw (this is so the bowl / top doesn't more pressure on the other screws). When you take the top off there's a big spring under it so it will want push the top off a bit, be carefull because it holds the needle in place. There's a rubber diaphram be careful with it and ease it off - check it over and lift it and the slide out. Now clean it all with carb cleaner and a clean cloth.
Now turn the carbs over and take the corresponding float bowl off. because your bike is running you probably don't need to fully strip this, have a look in the bottom of the bowl and clean any residue out then do the same around the floats. Spray some cleaner through the jets - don't push anything into them. Reassemble the top and then the float bowl - put a little copperslip on the screw threads and don't over tighten the screws.
Repeat for the other three and put the carbs back on the bike
A tip is to attach the throttle cables before putting them onto the rubbers. Put the bike in gear because you need to push the carbs a bit to get them to seat. Make sure that they are on properly before you do up the reatining clips.

cheers evilchicken, all this has now been done. took it out for a blast today and its running sweet as. apart from i think my clocks are buggered. put on a new speedo cable and the end has been mashed around at the wheel pick up end indicating that the pick up is trying to turn but the clocks arent. dont know of anyone with another set of clocks do you? theres a set on ebay but i think £50 + £9 p&p is a little excessive. this might sound like a stupid question but do u need the speedo to work for the MOT? and also is there an easy way to set the mileage on them to match my old ones?

cheers

Put a wanted add in the for sale section. Have a look at the speedo end and clean it up then add a little light oil (3in1). When you put the cable in you have make sure it's properly home and into the square drive. If you don't and just do it up each end it will chew the very end off.

Clocks should cost around 20-25 ... but that's just opinion
