Going the Hybrid route, now on the road!

3EN2...ok I'll take pics. Making a start tomorrow (Saturday) Going to remove engine and everything else i need to junk, will clean up the frame etc while i have the chance, then wait for my new engine to arrive, incidently the engine i have bought has been tuned by Slipstream, the head has been flowed, not sure if the cams are standard or not. But hopefully it should punch out a few more horses

Ok stripped the 400 down to almost frame and swingarm, so far so good
This is before i started


Getting there now, engine out, rear wheel off so i give it the cleaning its been crying out for for years

Started cleaning 22 years of crud off, needs a bit more cleaning, and I'm also thinking about polishing up the frame while it's like this, new forks are on, cleaned and greased headrace bearings, mudguard looking clean again and is now half the weight!!

Next weekend polishing starts, while I'm waiting for the engine to arrive...

Hi, unless you like polishing frames/swing arms alot, dont polish them leave them laquared. my 3en1 has a polished frame swing arm and loads of other stuff, and when there freshly polished up they look fantastic, but keeping them like that is a bit of a game, even keeping the frame looking the same colour is difficult.
Its fine if you dont use it much, and not at all through the winter but if you ride all year you'll spend as much time polishing stuff as you do riding it!
But it does look great when its all done.

Agreed - and it takes an age to do it too. Better to get everything clean and repaint if it needs to be then get the engine in.

I do ride my bike all year, i was just going to do the frame sides, i could live with having to polish them every week or so, I'm not going to polish the swingarm though cos that will require more effort than im willing to put in

Ok, i decided to polish the frame, found a good tip on the interweb. The coating on the frame is anodizing, which i found was rediculously hard to try and get through, so i found a tip to use a strong oven cleaner, this proved to be a waste of time after about 30 minutes, so i found another tip, use caustic soda, i mixed it with a little water to produce a thick brushable solution which i brushed onto the frame i wanted to polish up, left it for 15 minutes and job done!! just needed to rub down with wet and dry which was quite easy...Frame now looks like this
My 600 engine is now in the frame

I'm interested to see just how much tuning this engine has had, all i know is it's not standard
Just another 2 or 3 weeks and i should find out...

Engine is now in, carbs on, placed the airbox on the carbs to see if the tank cover will fit,and yes it did without the need to raise the front of the tank cover, rad is now fitted which was a doddle once i removed the fan, did'nt even need to make brackets for the bottom mounts, all bolted on no probs at all
Have filled with water and all dry...still got some work to do but its coming on nicely, cant wait to get it running now May be able to fire it up on the weekend....

yeah im looking forward to riding it, i know my fzr600 was quite quick, but i expect this will be quicker, and i know it handles a lot better than the 6
