As spooky said, 20 years of road grime and neglect.

Firstly goto david silvers, etc and order 4 seals and 2 boots per caliper. you really need to change the boots too as these are what the sliding pins go into, when these stop working and water enters your greased sliders the caliper sizes and braking becomes crap.




Remove the calipers from the bike and strip them into complete pieces, removing all the rubber seals (2 per piston) and rubber boots.. (2 per caliper)



Soak your calipers in some heavy duty degreaser and give them a clean with something non-abrsive, we dont' want to remove metal here.. This caliper has been cleaned up and has a new boot installed.



Lightly coat the inside of the calipers with red grease as well as the seals and install them into the calipers, new seals will go in very very easily.

20ml of rubber grease is enough to do 15 or more sets of calipers, your really don't need a lot.



Install the pistons, new brake pads and the final boot (this boot sits in the metal braket that holds the caliper and grease this up. The proper grease for this is Orange, I can't remember the proper name, red grease here will be ok to use too, as long as its rubber safe it wont hurt.

2 sachets of grease, one of them will be more than enough for each caliper, you only need a light coating over the 4 seals and piston surface. Even 1 packet of that is enough..

Sliders are the pins the caliper slides on, once you have removed the pads the caliper should slide off the bracket, the two pins on the bracket are what you need to grease up.

If you don't replace the rubbers in the caliper then at least make sure they are clean inside and the pins are clear from crud, rust etc.

Ideally yes, both types of grease but some red rubber grease[1] is better than nothing on them.

I've just realised looking at the picture that one slider is on the caliper, on is on the bracket. Same principal however.

Yup, one slider on bracket, one on caliper.. the sliders actually unbolt and are replaceable if they are really worn.

I can't remember the proper name, red grease here will be ok to use too, as long as its rubber safe it wont hurt.

As myself and druid said, you can get away with using rubber grease but the orange stuff is better if you can spare the extra £3!

If you use the wrong grease it'll affect the rubber and ...

1. the seals wont fit anymore
2. they'll swell up and let water / crap in and the caliper will sieze.

ok been on david silvers an it could be me beeing dumb but i cant seem to find the seals or boots help please
