Thanks for all of your replys changed the oil cleaned the plugs started first time with smoke then cleared out.

Thats is incorrect. My fuel tap is modified, but it stops the flow when the tap is off.
The modified fuel tap always flows when the tap is on, while the standard tap requires the tap to be on, AND a vacuum at the pipe that leads down to the "auto fuel vacuum valve tube" on the engine.

You only need to disconnect the tank from the bike, put it above a jug and turn the tap on to find out if its modified.

Stickshift: Quite right. Depends if its modified or not.

I agree with CMSMJ1. Fix the carbs or you'll always have some fuel trickling into your engine.

I actually had this problem to a certain degree with my old carbs and only fixed it *after* changing the oil. Perhaps I should change the oil again. Is the rule: If in doubt, change the oil? :) My filter is quite new, should I change it too or just the oil?

its not immediately obvious without taking the fuel tap to pieces.

You can buy a repair kit for it. There was a split rubber diaphragm in mine that was letting the fuel flow anyway.

But please if the fuel in your oil and the resultant blue smoke hasnt injured your motor too badly any further starting attempts before you change that oil will finish it off.

right! I forgot, I was talking about my knackered fuel tap. silly me.

Ah, I see.

Ok, first thing do *not* try and run it.

You need to drain the oil, remove and replace the oil filter, if you do not you run the risk of fscking up the engine.
