well POS is almost ready to have its guts dropped out. just need an extra pair of hands, release one bolt and the motor can be tipped forward and removed before being cleaned and fitted into the new frame.
removing the swingarm pivot bolt will be easy as the previous owner (butcher) has clearly lost the special nut and made do with a couple of big jakey washers and a bit fuck off nylock nut.
Infact this seems to sum up the typical standard of the bike overall, snap the rear brake lever - fix it ? nah feck that, use an old spanner, couple of hose clips to secure it and drill a hole in it and use a nut and bolt as the pedal bit.
Only saving grace looks like the motor has nothing rounded so here is hoping monkey hasnt been inside bodging. but knowing my luck the motors twatted and a non runner and will need swopping again.

POS had a bit more work today, lifted the frame from the engine, removed the headstock bearings and cleaned / greased and refitted into new frame and after giving the engine a good scrub and degrease fitted the new frame over the engine.
well its onward and upward now. need a full lockset thats clear.

Weh hey i am off on this now, worked out the spacer setup on the engine and got it all finger tight and it all seems to line up just dandy.
went to town removing the arm from the old frame, and kinda wish i hadnt bothered really. I am going to give this project a new name, something more fitting as project POS (piece of shit) while very apt, doesnt possibly convey the level of shittyness to every piece of fucking metal attached to the bike.

Perhaps some ideas from everyone - project titanic ? or project exon valdez ? as its clearly an oily rusted mess that looks like its been at the bottom of the sea for years !

Anyway with the swingarm and shock off, its clear the swingarm is not exactly the nicest cosmeticaly. now i appreciate its a budget build and a bit of a bitsa, but pleasing on the eye is what a NC30 is all about and i know my eye will be drawn to this big jakey scrape in the usual place every time i look at the bike. So i am after a swingarm, dont mind a minor mark if its cheap but this ones twatted tbh.
The rear hub - yep some ham fisted amatuer has belted seven kinds out of it, so i think i quick clean and file up should save it, if not then into the NC30 grave it will go.
As for the shock - its actually rather good, not too rusty and actually damps too but i have a maxton to chuck in it. all the bolts and linkages are a seized stinking mess, so perhaps a cheapo powder coat of a few parts to make it look pretty once again.

Engine bolted into frame, swingarm (thanks Ali) bolted to frame with dogbone and Maxton rear shock.
forks are loose (and yes i know it does resemble CCC - cheshire county choppers) while i await a lockset and top yolk.
Next to do is to loom the bike, and paint the forks and some other bits while its apart to smarten / protect from rot as its always going to be a winter / not afraid to use all weathers bike.

Right well today its forks are dry after a repaint and laquer. dog bone painted in plasticote. all torqued up at the rear. wheels are my UK spares so will do for now.
next week, refit loom, top yolk so i can torque the forks. source a set of RVF carbs and jet accordingly, fit yamamoto exhaust, subframe and undertray. possibly refit cooling system too
its all starting to come together. cant remember where brackets go and the like, may need to strip the UK one to see where stuff goes.

That motor looks in good nick paul certainly no oil leaks or cracks or copious amounts of silicone. Surely the exon valdez is a fraudulent name to be giving the poor thing. How about RUNT? a good runty is what we all need for hacking about in less than perfect weather, abusing and yet like a faithful old thing they come back and never give up?

Good project though, nothing like just tinkering and as oft found, when its something you tell yourslef is already knackered you try and get more of it done yourself. Personally i see it becoming your new prideful400 in time and your cbr600 becoming the winter hack. Although if you were to sell that it would mean something more special can come on the ring trip next year.

Or the next one in the pipeline is a week to morocco (916 in marrakesh now thats a photo!!!!)
