you could try spraying carb cleaner down the carbs as it cranks over or if you're feeling brave a bit of petrol just keep it cranking and it should go! (you'll need a bottle to hold some fuel if its a tj as the tank will need to be off!) play with the trottle and the choke i recon it'll go! had the same problem with mine as it had stood since 2007!
i did link it up to a large diesel battery though!

clue to this, would be if you can get it to fire on carb cleaner or EZ-start but it won't run off the carbs (which would indicate only it's a "fuelling" problem not a "fuel" problem - so it could also be an issue with the carbs)

Thanks for the feedback. I have the bike connected to a battery that I removed from my Evo so it can crank for ages. I do have aero start that I've tried briefly. Not overly keen about using raw fuel.

The fellow I bought it off said that it new fuel. But I'll more than likely replace this week if I get no joy. I've removed the airbox and have the tank sat loosley on the frame so I can access the carbs if need be.

Are there any interlocks that I could be forgetting?

Take the carbs of clean them and put them on.
Take the plus out (completely) and crack the engine over till the oil light goes out.
Put some new plugs in.
No air box.
Put a long pipe onto the fuel tank and use new fuel.

Put a good load of carb cleaner past the butterfly valves in the carbs and crank the bike for a good long while while still spraying the occational carb cleanerover the bellmouths. This isn't time for much mechanical sympathy.
The engine will spin faster and faster (hopefully) and start to catch, keep the starter turning the engine and keep the carb cleaner going gently try to feed the throttle in. eventually the bike will run off the throttle and you can let the starter out get the bike warm and then see if it will idle. Refit the airbox and hopefully it will start as normal.

remember to clean the fuel filter too! raw fuel does give a nice blue flame backfire

It impresive! unless ur my brother who happens to be stood near the bike at the time! wish i could of got a pic.

Easy way is a little trigger pump spray bottle (like windowlene). and give it a squirt while it's cranking. Not too much fuel about and it's atomised.

Spray straight down the carb/inlet tract. Have engine kill switch to hand if you're open tract or it can rev up a lot.

Done it loads of times no probs. Last time was resurrecting the FZR engine now in my 4/6 3TJ. Pop pop- poppety pop and off we go
