Recovered stolen bike, need advice please!!
Ive recently recovered my NC30 from a compound after it was found 5 months after it was stolen. See stolen bike register for full sob story, lol!!
The problem i have is, everything off my bike was taken and put into another chassis. Although they probably shouldnt havbe the police have let me recover the whole bike as the NC30 chassis on the bike is not mine, and is not registered to anyone. but the engine is mine.
Does anyone know what i should do to make the bike legal. I am recoverin the bike by buying some parts it needs and gettin it ready for its MOT, but will the MOT centre notice that the chassis doesnt match up to the v5 documents?! or shud i just contact ther dvla and stop buggin u lot. lol
Ive got this bad feelin the dvla are gonna tell me i have to pay thru my teeth to make this legal!!
and im working to a really tight budget as im on an apprentice wage and i wasnt insured when the bike was stolen!! (dont worry i wasnt riding the bike illegally, it was being stored ina a back garden)
any advice please??!!
Thanks
Dan

Does the Chassis have a V5? Do you have the V5? if so then get it in your name and tell them the engine has changed.
If not does it have a registration? If it does then apply for the V5 and change the engine number when you get it.
If none of the above then it gets a bit trickier but basically you can apply for a registration.

hi, The problem you might have in the future is that somebody will report their chasis missing which in turn you are in posession of. which might lead you down the sticky path of being in posession of stolen goods. my advice to you is talk to the police and tell them the engine is yours but the rest isnt !! and see what they say, if they agree for you to have it get it in writing from them. then go to the DVLA and tell them this and the position you are in and get advice from them it shouldnt cost too much!!

You can register that your old bike has had a chassis change - if you can prove the old fram is dead. I had to swap frames on my race bike and am going to register it so I can daylight MOT it. I need to prove the original frame, linked to the reg plate, is dead and gone and they'll assign a new frame number to the reg.
Call the local DVLA and ask them..they'll sort it out

if the frame they have built the bike into was registerd as stolen the police wouldnt NOT have released it, but without the reg number you cant apply for the v5 , you have the log book for the bike with the original numbers ?. some stamps will sort the problem out .

What i'd do is buy an NC30 frame off ebay that already has a V5.
build your bike into that and simply imform the DVLA that the engine number has been changed.
You'll have a new frame and reg/number then with no history of being stolen / written off or whatever else may have been done to your bike.
Plus you can be sure it's been built properly as if somebodys rebuitl your NC30 god knows what kind of job they've done with rebuilding it, i've seen horror stories of peopel buying R1's etc with engines held in with wood screws etc etc.

Re: Recovered stolen bike, need advice please!!
thanks for all the advice guys!! :)
i rang the dvla and they told me to send the changed v5 document, sum pics of the new chassis no. a letter of what happened and a letter off the police, which i have done, so hopefully all goes well and in 20 working days ill have a new changed v5 document.
But it might not be as simple if this chassis has been paid out on by an insurance company cos then i might have an insurance company asking me for money! hopefully not though
ill let u know how i get on so u know for urselfs for the future!
thanks again!
