No spark on NC30

So this is my diagram, im going to run this circuit on a completly independant battery to the one on the bike, so any voltage drop can be eliminated.



As you can see I have omitted the tacho and speedo wire as I beleive that they are poitless in this instance.

I have tried to maintain original wire colours as best as I could. You will note that the +12v line is black and white, according to the wiring diagram this is correct.

The coils will not be grounded, only because they do not need to be as neither the primary or secondary winding has any sort of resistance to the coil pack tags thus i deem it a wasted effort.

The spark secondary circuit is completed between the two spark plugs, this only the spark plugs on leads need be connected to one another.

I wont have time to test this evening i dont think, so tell me your thoughts ladies and gents!

Well that didn't seem to work.... Oh goodie, back to square one.

Incidently, does anybody know what kind of pulses that you need from the pulse coils for the ECU to process? Only it would be nice If i could set up a test bed and simulate the pulses going to the ecu so i dont have to keep cranking the bike over!

The last thing that I have to replace are the coils, as its the only item that I havnt changed, yet everything tests perfectly on them both, and the chances of having both fail at the same time is astronomical! But its my last call then I need to find another bike to test out my ECUs on!

If anybody can see something stupid Im missing, please tell me!

Im just off J27/M62 near leeds.

I was actually going to ask if anybody happened to have some bits and bobs I could borrow to eliminate possible causes so if you know its a good working ECU that woudl be fantastic!

I must say, im half tempted to invest in a spare bike anyhow for a bit of a project and spares! It would certainly help with situations like this!

I havn't had a VFR myself for many years, but it brings back good memories!

Borrowing an ECU would be remarkably handy. At least it would answer once and for all if it is the ECU causing the problems. I shall PM you!

My coils test OK, but one test is right on the limits.

The specs say primary coil side should be 2.5-3.5 ohms, and the secondary side should be 14-24k with caps.

My primary is 3 ohms, so thats fine, but secondary is 23.8k ohms and although in spec, quite high but I don't see it being an issue.

Solved.

The ECU was the issue all along, Im pretty certain that whilst it had a rather odd urge to clense itslef in a bath of water, this did it no good in the long run and eventually caused its demise.

However, before I tested a new ECU oon my existing loom. Im my wisdom I decided to alter the wiring whilst I had it apart with a spare loom I had. However in doing so I overlooked a rather unusal item. The Pulse generator coils have four wires in a black plug, with my existing connector looking rather tired, I cut one off of the new loom and spliced it in. What I didn't realise, is that the wire colours to pins are different on BOTH ENDS, and so even though continuity was perfect and the plugs matched up spot on, the ECU wiring is a different way around to the pulse coil side....

It was only by a stroke of luck I managed to notice this as one of the connector shrouds on the ECU side fell off and revealed the wires in the back of the plug.

Well, solved now!

Ahh, thats where it becomes interesting. You see, whilst it was failing intermitantly I didn't do anything to the bike. However, when it decided not to spark EVER again, I ripped the bike apart and changed the wiring. Hence, plugging in a NEW ecu didn't work as the wires were wrong. It was silly of me really as I shoudl have solved the initial problem BEFORE makign alterations.

I blame it on the stupid Honda techs changing pins on identical plugs....

Oh and yes she is most pleased, just need to put it back together tommorow and we can finally go out for a blast!
