FZR400 3TJ - Electrical Gremlins - Help!

Post by rixfy7 »

Right lads, I've got a real head-scratcher here with my '90 FZR400 3TJ. Been having some intermittent electrical issues that are driving me nuts. Basically, sometimes she starts up first time, no problem. Other times, she's completely dead. No lights, no starter motor cranking, nothing.
I've checked the battery, which seems fine (showing a good voltage and holding charge). I've also had a look at the fuses, and none of them are blown. I'm thinking it might be something to do with the starter relay or maybe even the ignition switch, but I'm not really sure where to start troubleshooting.
Has anyone else experienced similar problems with their FZR400? Any advice on what to check, or known weak points in the electrical system? Any help would be much appreciated! I'm itching to get back out on the road..

Check the battery terminals - clean them if necessary

Check the main ground connection - look for continuity between that and the negative battery terminal using a voltmeter on the appropriate setting

Then check voltage going from the positive on the battery moving forward

Check and clean connections as you go

Check you're getting voltage at the ignition switch
