nc35 starting issues

Post by Skim325 » Thu May 16, 2019 3:17 pm

Hi all,
first time posting here, aside from my introduction some time ago.
I purchased a 97 nc35 maybe about 6 months ago, and for the most part, it's worked pretty well.

Recently though, the bike started to have idle issues, power loss, and other various issues, that pointed me to clogged idle jets.
So I pulled out the idle jets, cleaned them up, and put the carbs back together. First and second tries putting it back together resulted in a leak from the float bowls, but that's been since resolved with new gaskets + gasoline safe gasket maker.

The issue that I'm having now though, is:
I was able to start the bike up and warm it up on choke. It sounded a bit off though, but didn't think much of it at first.
After letting it warm up for a few minutes, I hopped on, and noticed there was a lack of power when twisting the throttle. (I park underground, so I didn't notice this until I got out of my apartment garage, and closer to the edge of the complex).

As I was siting at the light to leave my apt complex, the bike stalled, and had difficulty starting back up.
I pulled over, and the bike started on choke but would die immediately after releasing the choke.

Other pertinent details:
-gas tank is about 1/3 full (maybe 1/4) I tried On, as well as the reserve settings when starting.
-spark plugs are new.
-breather hose is showing signs of cracking at one of the ends. I didn't check the rest of the hose yet, though it definitely needs changing.

Can anyone provide some suggestions on what to troubleshoot and what order?

Thanks!

Battery not charging is my money :)

Test the reg/rec and confirm that the battery is being properly filled. Mine did similar - would start and go, and it eventually ran out of battery as my generator was dead. Reg Rec failures will kill your battery and generator..

So, follow the charging checklist for some peace of mind.

Hmm thanks.
I’ll check that out. One thing I for sure noticed was that when originally troubleshooting the bike after cleaning the idle jets was that the battery had died. At that point I had made multiple attempts at charging, and by that time, the bike had been sitting for closer to a month. I didn’t think much of it, hooked it up to my car and plugged it back in to the bike later. I’ll report back after checking and update.

Did it sound like it wasn't firing on all four plugs ? - pull them & check

How old is the gas?
what else did you do with the carbs ?

Air Pilot screws>
Balance / Synch>

Whats the condition of the plugs now - I'm guessing they are black (too much fuel)

I had my ear plugs in at the time, and didn’t notice really. I’ll double check this evening when I get time to work on the bike. When the bike was warming up, I didn’t notice any audio oddities with the bike.
So tonight, I’ll pull the plugs and check their condition.

Gas is only as old as the bike’s been out of commission. I use it regularly, so maybe 2months...max?

As for the carbs, that’s it. Just pulled them out, checked the pilot jets, and cleaned them with carb cleaner and compressed air. Noticed 1 or two were clogged as I pulled them out, meaning I couldn’t see any light as I held it up and looked thru.

Didn’t touch or adjust the float heights.
Didn’t touch the air pilot screw.
Nor did I balance or sync.

The thought process here was that i wanted to reduce the number of things that I messed with, while trying to resolve the issue. This was the first time pulling the carbs, so I just wanted to do the bare minimum to get things running, and then work up from there.

Hey all,
Sorry for the super delayed update on the bike. Haven't really had time to work on it.

So update, I finally got the bike up and running again.
Fixed the leak in the carbs, got everything back together, and tested the bike out.

Initially, it rode well, and smooth, similar to how it did before the issues started happening.
I took it out today again for a bit longer, around 45 minutes or so, and it started experiencing some of the issues it did originally.
- loss of power
- bike died when I came to a stope
- after starting it back up again, the idle sounded weaker, and throttled response was slow
- at times, after coming to a stop light, the idle would take a while to settle back down to the normal 1.7k rpm range, hanging around 3-4k range for a bit.
- acceleration off the line was weak, and the stuttering noises, as if the bike was trying to find power came back.

You can check out the video i took from my gopro today, so get an sense of what was happening.
Please feel free to check it out, and if anyone has any suggestion on what I need to look at, please let me know.

I think you are pulling the carbs off again..
Sounds like its running like crap.

Do pull all the pilots & mains - i think you will find they are plugged.
Do ck the float levels.
Do a bench carb carb synch.
Also ck your fuel tank - you are getting the crap from somewhere

But I get the feeling you might be aware of this anyway - lol

Yeah. I was thinking that would be the case....
Thanks for your input.

Don't see that you confirmed fuel flows freely from tap when vacuum applied to manifold hose?
