Instrument bulbs, Headlight unit swap
Hi All,
Been looking through a lot of forums and I am trying to find out what type of bulbs are used in the Instruments, I did see someone say about using LED's any ideas or advice.
Having ridden the bike in the dark the other day I realised how dull the lights are. I have seen people say about using FZR600 or 1000 units as they are a straight swap and you can use H4 bulbs. Is that right?
Mine's a twin headlight 88 plated bike, not checked the model number yet. Too much work and not enough spare time.

Re: Instrument bulbs, Headlight unit swap
Hi there
To tell the model of far 400 look at the front fairing.
Twin headlights is a 1WG but there sub models ....
No air intake is genesis 1986
As above but adjustable suspension and single seat is a 2tk
Air intakes above the lights is 3en1 1988
Air intakes below is 3en2 1989
So headlights ... yes you can change them for a 600 or 1000 fzr unit. I think the 400 uses a Japan market bulb (it does in the 3en2) UK bikes have twin H4 bulbs. Don't fit high power bulbs (unless you use a relay). When you take the top fairing the lamps will come with it but be aware theyre not fixed in. Just plug the 600 lamps into the loom fit them in top fairing and put the whole thing back on the bike. It's a bit of a fiddle.
While the fairing is off you can get to the instament cluster The bulbs look like these

Get them at halfords or a car parts shop cheaper. You just pull the rubber holder out and replace them. To be honest led type might be better but there's probably not much in it

Use penetrating oil plus gas grade A ... soak them a few times, they should be long nuts (The same as the exhaust nuts). Don't get all Rambo on them the studs are held by the plastic of the fairing and if they tear loose theyre a big job to sort.
Yup ... fzr400r 3en1 exup nice condition too.

Re: Instrument bulbs, Headlight unit swap
I dropped some None Trademarked penetrating fluid on them, I'm working for a couple of days so should give it time to soak.
Yeah, it's in fabulous condition.
Just want to do some updates like the lights to make it more useable.

Re: Instrument bulbs, Headlight unit swap
These should fit if yours has the same bulb holders as the 3TJ.
10 should be enough to do all of them.
I haven't tried them myself, worth a try at the price though..

Re: Instrument bulbs, Headlight unit swap
Slightly off topic, can a 3tj headlight be swapped out for a 600, 1000, or whats the best option to get rid of the standard candle light.
Wouldnt even mind buying a spare 400 unit and changing it, someway?
