Testing regulator/rectifier off bike-NC24
Anybody know how you test a regulator/rectifier off the bike to ensure it is functional?
Cheers,
Tom

you can do a few basic tests but onbike testing is good to ensure it works under load, any reason you need to do off bike?fasttom wrote:Anybody know how you test a regulator/rectifier off the bike to ensure it is functional?

If you have an old stock nc24 reg/rec knocking around proabbly best just to upgrade to an R6 reg/rec.. they can take more abuse so you dont have to keep ontop of your battery lke you would with a stock reg/

Re: Testing regulator/rectifier off bike-NC24
Well for the full back story after fully stripping, cleaning, replacing all carb seals and setting carb up to factory settings the bike started on the button a week ago. Battery has been on trickle charge since but the bike now refuses point blank to start. I am wondering if it's something to do with the reg/rec either burnt out or on way out and not providing enough juice to start the bike.
Is the r6 conversion a straight swop or is their any additional fettling required ?

Do you get instrument lights with ignition on?

Hi, not starting has nothing to do with the reg (unless its well nakered and blowing the main fuse), have you had the plugs out cleaned and tested them for spark? I think 24's have 10mm plugs and aren't as picky as nc30's but its well cold so I'd checking plugs before you starting getting more involved.
Is it cranking at normal speed? Maybe worth checking fuel pipes an fuel tap vac pipe if 24' have one...

Plugs have been out and checked for spark. It cranks at normal speed until battery drains through trying to start it. I have noticed it doesn't last long at full cranking speed although the battery is new (within 4 months) and is kept trickle charged...

Can you smell fuel while its cranking? Were the plugs wet? Guess the chokes working ok and carbs are seated ok?
Maybe try putting a few drops of petrol (or some easystart) down the carb inlets to see what happens. Batteries wont last long cranking a engine over, have you got a car battery to jump it off aswell, but don't keep the button start button pressed for ages you'll kill the starter motor.
The plug caps deffo on the right cylinders? Sorry for all the questions but its kinda difficult over the net!! lol

Plugs wet so getting fuel, all ignition coils plugged into the correct cylinders. Carbs are well seated and choke works as far as I am aware (when choke operated all choke slides on carbs slide freely. Just don't understand his it can go from starting on the first press of the button one week to absolutely nothing ! The joy of working on old bikes I suppose.
