Bahh, electrics.

Post by pearson* »

So, I was riding happily along the ring road the other day and suddenly the engine cuts out and before I know whats going on, I see a 3 to 4ft flame jump out of my exhaust and i'm stopped dead in he worst place possible (overtaking lane on a blind overpass :| )

Originally thought it was a catastrophe but after some initiative and road-side diagnosis I thankfully discover it was simply a battery with no charge leading to unburnt fuel being sucked through the system and igniting at the tip of the hot exhaust.

Looking through it today, the battery has a charge rate varying between 17 and 18 volts at 3000rpm - so about 3v over the manuals spec.

With this in mind, i'm guessing the reg-rec has blown and I need a new one so two questions:

First, how do I guarantee it is the reg-rec that's gone and it's not something else.

Second, is there a unit off a newer bike that's any more reliable than the FZR ones, or are the 3TJ sets generally quite good?

Hi, that deffo sounds like the reg/rec has gone. It'll kill the battery with an output that high so i wouldnt run it too much. I put a r6 reg/rec on the 3en1 but i had to move it and play about. I dunno about the 3tj sorry.
Cheers

The r/r Has failed high as you suspected and Morespeedvicar has confirmed,
The clue to diagnosis is in the name of the component............Regulator.
The later R6 unit with improved heat sink capacity is the recognised upgrade as stated by Morespeed. Its not a direct plug in though.
Don tz from the US FZR forum does a harness adaptor if wiring is not your forte.

3tj reg recs are OK and I don't often hear of them failing, I'd just replace it. Check the battery's ok, it could be fried.

I literally just brought anew battery which has no ran out of juice, so im guessing it is the reg/rec.

Problem is, i've got seized studs in the engine block where the exhaust downpipes fit on and as im aware, no way of getting them out. So I think im going to deal with that before i spend more money on a reg/rec only to have to bin the thing anyways.

Thanks for your helps.

Siezed or snapped off exhaust studs are an easy and cheap fix if you have tools and know how or confidence;if not take it to someone who does, butchery here costs a lot in the long run.How many are sheared off ?

got 2 left in there now.

Managed to get 2 nuts on the small amount of thread that was remaining. A friend with some welding equipment is going to pop over and see if he can weld the nuts onto the studs and then it should just be a case of pushing some back into it but il see what he says tomorrow.

If it all goes well, order the reg/rec too and then back on the road by the weekend :)
