Steering bearing stuck?

Post by tigerclaw »

I have stripped the front section of the bike but I cant get the bottom bearing off the shaft? Whats the trick? or the tool? (Just to be clear I have the yoke with the steering shaft on my workbench in a vice, its not stuck in the bike)

when i changed the steering stem bearings, i had trouble with the bottom one too. my ones were both crushed and broken so i had to take them our and put new ones in. the way i took my bottom bearing out was, i got a pointy chisel. and a hammer. cracked the bearing race in half. and it came out, no damage to the stem itself. others might find this a little too extreme, so do it at your own risk, but it worked for me, and i had tried everything before hand.

Grinding part way through the bearing cone first will make it easier to crack open with the chisel.

Thanks for the help... after reading what you suggested I bought a cold chisel (better than a screw driver  ) and I was lucky enough that with a couple of solid cracks it started shifting and then slid right off ... lucky lucky
