FZR400 fork will fit on a XJR?

Post by Ugo51 » Thu Mar 07, 2013 9:35 pm

Hi guys,
couldn't find a specific section for the XJR400 ( :( ) so I rearranged my question to fit in here
do you know if the fork from a FZR400 will fit on a XJR?
or, alternatively, do you know if any other fork will fit?

cheers

I have to say I don't know much about the XJR so you're going to need to measure a few things
Diameter of the forks
Diameter of the disks

I can see sliding calipers ... they're a bit budget

What I reckon is a pair of forks and calipers but which ones will depend on what you have.

You should be able to fit 3EN1 forks, they are 41mm same as the XJR400. Then you can benefit from Thundercat/R6/Fazer Blue Spot calipers. I'm pretty sure they are the same length too give or take a few mm.
Conventional wisdom says to know your limits. To know your limits you need to find them first. Finding your limits generally involves getting in over your head and hoping you live long enough to benefit from the experience. That's the fun part.

thank you guys for the response :)

the fork stanchions are 41mm in diameter.
I'm not 100% sure about the rotors size, I guess it's the usual 298mm used on most Yamahas? I will check them out

do you know anything about the yokes size? the Thundercat has a larger rim than mine (3.5'' rim for 120/60 wheel, while I think mine is 2.5'' and I mount the 110/70)

What else could I measure to be reasonably sure of the feasibility of the work? what about the wheel spindle?

I go to check the discs

You can use the FZR400 3EN1 wheel and fit a 120/70 to that, although I'm sure you can fit a 120 to the XJR wheel. You want 298mm discs, as opposed to the 282mm discs on the earlier 1WG, for the Blue Spot calipers.

To make life easy, just fit a complete FZR400 3EN1 front end with wheel and discs.

mh, interesting...
I can live with my discs and calipers, that's not an issue at the moment.
what I want to do is to find a front end from a bike that's not an import, so it will be easier to find spares in the future

i didn't know about the 282mm discs, I've always thought they are all 298.

Um ... actually ... The 3en1 is 38mm forks and the 282mm disks.

You want 3EN2, they had 41mm forks and 298mm disks.

UK bikes with 41mm forks are the ThunderCat FZR600R Foxeye and TRX850, the FZS Fazer also had them but I'm told the forks aren't the same, all are adjustable. I'd look to change the calipers because they might have different mounting bolt spacings, all the above use 100mm. The T'Cat and Foxeye's spindle is a bigger diameter than the 3EN2, the foxeye's wheel is a 3.5" and is the same as the 400 3TJ, they come in purple or white ... the TRX850 can be had in gunmetal.

I think the XJR uses a similar engine to the old XJ 600 you might be able to swap it with that or use a FZ600, but these are getting popular for aircooled racing which migh push the price up. Don't take my word on this though measure it all up first.

A 3EN1 front end is a bit of a backwards step as the forks are only 38mm, but 3EN2 (41mm) parts should be ok if the fork pitch (the distance across the fork tops measured centre to centre) is the same. The 3EN2 is 195mm. If it's not the same then you might have to mess about with spacers.

Out of curiosity (or is curiousity?), why do you want to change the forks for FZR400 ones? They probably very similar to XJR forks and they're not adjustable (unless you get some SP ones but they're the wrong sizes)

I love XJRs... I don't suppose you want to sell yours, do you?

wow, thanks for these additional info :)

well, i don't want to get the FZR400 forks, also because it's an import as well, so it's not gonna be any improvement

my point infact is to get a fork from a bike that's common in the UK (FZS, FZR, YZF...)
now, summing up all the info I have to:
check the size of my discs
check the pitch of the fork
check the mounting distance of the caliper (I'm almost sure it's 85mm)

what about the forks from a XJ600? beside the single disc one, of course

My bad, sorry  Yes, 3EN2 is the 41mm forks, not the 3EN1
