fzr rear wheel? size?
Hi all.
Looking for some advice my fzr 400 1wg needs a new set of tyres I have bought some bt45s for it, the tyre on the back at the moment is an avon 140/70/v18 I have bought the same size but a different make (bt45) now the front has 110/70/17 again bt45s.
So here is the question is it normal for my fzr to have a bigger back wheel than the front ? Im getting worried the new rear tyre wont fit despite it being.the same size as a fellow biker said no bike would have two different size rims.
Any advice please ?
Cheers

Re: fzr rear wheel? size?
many bikes are fitted with different size front and rear wheels with many size combinations of front and rear the front mainly being slimmer than the rear so you get more pinpoint steering the modern trend is for 17" wheels front and rear for the best all round handling and tyre choice. hope this helps rick

Your mate is wrong.
Back in the day bikes used to have 18" dia front and back, have a look at some of the old aircooled bikes like Katanas, Z1000s (the Mad Max bikes). Then in the early 80's they used smaller dia 16" front which meant the bike would steer quicker, have a look at the VF1000, FZ600. Those bikes where frisky but they size of brake discs were also increasing and the small wheels made it harder to fit the brake caliper and disc in tight to the fork. This lead to a 17" being adopted, it gave quicker steering than the old 18" and where more practical than 16"s ... your bike is from this era the mid to late 80's, you're looking at the FZR1000. After this the rear wheel sizes also came down to 17".
Race bikes, Superbikes and MotoGP use smaller wheels, 16.5" but they're tyres have a higher profile, that's how they can lean over so far, although BSB is going to go to 17" wheels soon.
In short there's nothing to worry about and welcome to the forum

Take it steady for a while, the tyres have a surface to them and there's a real ease agent used in the molds. The need to heat cycle and be scrubbed in a bit before you act out you MotoGP dreams.
