very slack chain and adjuster stuck - advice pls?

So long as the hub is not at the furthest point back on the swingarm, you should be able to adjust it more. If you are using excessive force, then there's something wrong and I'll guarantee that it's dirt in the creavace between the hub and swingarm. As for that pic, I've never used the guide as a chain life indicator as I've never ran standard sized sprockets on my bikes so it'd never be acurate. If the chain is over stretched or has tight spots then I'd say to change it, if not, then leave it alone.

So it looks like I need to remove the bearing holder, having removed it should it be a case of cleaning the bearing holder and swing arm etc I don't need to strip the bearing holder down and replace bearings etc?

I am more than a bit hacked off with this though, especially as the weather is good!

just a thought , have you tried to open the split in the arm with a large flat bladed screwdriver just to losen it off a touch,
also it took about 20 mins to remove my hub last time i did it so providing you got the 46mm socket and a tourqe wrench you could have it done in no time

Its not as big of job as it seems, no need to remove the bearings just remove the large spindle and hub then clean it all up. An hours job maybe 2

I can loosen it OK so I think that its open enough, I don't seem to be able to loosen it enough to get the chain right off though, but that may just be me being incompetent, I guess its stuck so I'll have to take it out. I'll need to buy a 46mm socket!

i didnt think it got to a certain point then stopped when tightening.. i thought it went loose again and started tightening again. but im not 100% sure on this.. obviously with a chain on it would get to a point where the chain is so taught you would be able to adjust anymore, but when no chain is on, it can turn and turn and turn?
i would defo do as recommended and give the whole arse end a good wipe and regrease... you will need a fookin big socket to get the nut off on the sprocket side.. 46mm i think.

i guess that would be difficult to tell by not being able to rotate the hub , but with the back wheel off you should be able to get a decent view down from above between the sprocket and the swingarm , you should be able to see what position the hub is at

and yes with no chain on the hub will turn and turn

with the hub as far back as it goes it will be in this position

so you should be able to see when you look down between the sprocket and swinger.
to get the thing out , you need to undo the 46mm socket and remove the sprocket carrier , remove the tourqe arm for the caliper and the caliper, pull the axle out from the wheel side , remove the circlip and caliper bracket the the whole hub will slide out the sprocket side

yeah its not a difficult job mate , for me the hardest bit was undoing the flipping 46mm nut, i needed a breaker bar or a long tube to slip on the socket set handle to get a bit of a tug on it , best unstake the hub nut and slacken it off before you put it on the abba
