Sluggish and almost dies during 1st gear acceleration

No fuel filter or fuel pump.

Seeing as it runs but dies after a bit I'd say fuel starvation. Probably either tank breather blocked or vacuum pipe died[1].

The tank breather for the NC30 is a screw in one on top of the tank, try first off removing the pipe from it in case that is blocked, you could also try removing it and going out for a quick spin (best not to have a full tank and don't change speed abruptly), bearing obviously in mind the dangers of having an open fuel tank! :)
If that doesn't cure it then it's off with the tank and investigate the two lines coming from the fuel tap, the smaller one is the vacuum line.

[1] What happens is if the vacuum tube is knackered when you give it lots of throttle it collapses and prevents any more fuel from getting to the carbs.

If it WAS that the fuel isnt getting through quick enough, wouldn't that make the engine just conk out completely until the fuel line fills up again? Or could it be that theres just enough getting through to keep it ticking over roughly which is whats happening?

Basically you get into a situation where the carbs are being emptied faster than they can be filled, I had a situation with my VFR750 where fine rust from the tank blocked the fuel filters[1] it was fine if you pootled, give it some stick and it would die.

[1] 5 fuel filters on the RC24!! One main before the fuel pump and one individual one per carb.

I reckon your vacuum line is split or perished and when the bike gets hot it allows the split to widen or the hose to collapse.

Have a look and see what state it is in.

well i left it overnight so the line should have filled back up, but when i started it the problems still there, sounds like a tank and wont idle properly. There was also a dodgy smell which im not happy about, like burning :O

Im going to drain the carbs today.

Well i checked the air filter and that was fine

Checked the fuel line and that was fine (the tank breather was ok too)

drained the carbs (more fiddly than i thought lol) but now it wont start, because the carbs are empty i suppose, but i ran the battery flat trying to start it, so how long should it take for them to fill up? unless the vacume system isnt working properly?

Charging the battery at the moment and will try again tomorrow

I gave in and tried to book it into the garage but they told me to go do this stuff first :O

You have 2 lines form the fuel tap - one to the carbs, and another to the cylinder head for the vacuum.
If the carbs are not refilling then the vacuum must not be working>

There are 3 spigots on the tap too so make sure the vacuum is on the right one!

Got to be worth one last look before the garage charges you £35 an hour...(or more!)

Yeah i noticed some others on there CMSMJ1 and wondered why there wasnt anything on them. the see through tube, which is think is the vacuum tube, is hooked up to the spigot on the bottom. Is this right?

I put my thumb on the end earlier when turning the engine over and i didnt feel any sucking whatsoever, so is it possible this vacuum is broken somehow? i turned the engine over loads in the hope they carbs would refill after yesterdays draining, but it didnt start, it sounded like it wanted to for a second at first, but then nothing at all.

So it seems no fuel is getting to the carbs and as you say, the vacuum must be kaput =\ Not sure how i can fix this :S

Hi everyone!

Well today i did the following:

Drained the tank and checked the 2 fuel filters - Clear and fine

I think the vacuum is infact working, as there was a suction when i put my thumb over the tube, so this i think is OK!

checked for blockages in the Cylinder spigot, and all the fuel tap spigots - clear and ok

Took the fuel tap apart and checked that and found that the rubber diaphragm inside had been sucked so much that it was jammed inside a hole. maybe this is why fuel hasnt been pumped round? Unjammed it and put it back together so hopefully that will be ok now.

tried to start it again but the battery was deadish from yesterdays attempts, so its on charge again now (i think the battery could do with replacing tbh).

everything ive done is new to me and im learning as i go so im not expert on all this, just using common sense and mine and a friends opinions!

Tomorrow we're going to re-sit the air filter/top of carbs piece back onto the carbs and make sure its all sealed properly because we noticed today as the engine was turning over, there was loud sucking sounds or sounds or air escaping coming from the engine. we think this might be because the top of the carbs part isnt seated properly.
