rvf400 Black smoke

Post by RVF00H »

hey guys im new to the forums so ill intro myself..im from sydney australia and own a 1994 Rvf400 with a tyga kit. Bought the bike a month ago and am loving every bit of it. Now the old owner has cut off the tip and cut the silencer and weilded the tip back on again to make it sound louder and all. I dunno if that contributes to the black smoke being blown out but when i start up the bike in the morning you get ur normal white smoke but than when i start reving it up abit a bit of black smoke comes out everytime i rev it to 4k and upwards.
..
I've just done a minor service 500kms ago and have changed the spark plugs. Is it normal for my bike to do this?
..
Also if anyone in the Sydney CBD know a place where i can pick up a full exhaust system for the rvf?
..
Thanks
Regards

Its probably running rich. get it on a dyno and get it re-jetted to suit.

Safe enough- its more of a problem if its running lean, but you'll g
drink a lot of fuel and possibly coke things up a bit (nothing a good thrash wont sort out once you've had it jetted properly)

RB Racing are one of the best V4 workshops in Oz.

They know these bikes inside out, they also sell exhaust systems.

hey guys i got the bike dynoed and jetted to suite and at the same time chucked on the tyga exhaust system. Rode it around..and ummm i dropped the bike :( Was trying to chuck a u turn but took the turn to sharp at slow speed. The drop wasn't harsh cause i was holding it up just before it hit the ground.. you rekon that would of knocked up my jets? Bcuz i noticed black smoke still coming out :S

Not likely to affect jets.

May cause a sticking float but you'd be leaking fuel everywhere.

Black smoke sounds like it's still a bit on the rich side.

How does the bike ride?

Is the end-can very sooty if you rub your finger on it?

yeh the end can is abit sootish but not as much as my last can. The bike is normal i think...i just took it for a ride around...and i thought id change the full tap and keep switch it to reserve through the ride. It didnt blow as much black smoke as it did before..you think my fuel tap could b the culprit
..
Also is it alrite to have ride around with the reserve tank on all the time?

I wouldn't imagine your fuel tap could be at fault, the carbs will only let through a certain amount of fuel & air.

As said above, black smoke does indicate it is running a bit rich - have you got the afr readings from the dyno - how low do they get?
