Racing an FZR on the cheap...questions
I'm back!!!!
Some may remember me from such disasters as my NC29 race engine project...
So I'm contemplating getting a cheap stock 3tj and putting it on the track on the cheap. I've been having a read through this section and have a couple of questions.
I'd heard from someone else who rides FZR's here that you could fit a late model R6 shock with no mods, but reading here it sounds like there is some sort of modification required. Is there a late model shock that goes straight in that isn't as scarce as rocking horse dodo's?
I've also heard that you can fit early model R6 fork internals, is this true? Or is just a set of spacers and heavier oil sufficient to get me going (which would be great as the forks have just been rebuilt according to the seller)? Seems to be a bit of both going on...
In the first instance I'm just going to thwack a muffler on it, not a full pipe. Anything else I should do like take out the air filter, air box lid, or recommended carb kits? Stock needles and bigger jets? Lift the needles with a spacer and jets?
I'll not be fiddling with the wiring, just pulling out the lights and road bits that aren't needed. Any tricks buried in the FZR that new players need to be aware of?

the 3tj will need an adapter, available via kayla!
not sure on the forks internals, would guess not as the tubes could be different diameters?
leave it as is to start with, messing with the airbox etc. will need dyno time to do properly. sort the handling to suit you first!
better progressive springs and a play with the oil level should be fine to start with!
you'll find it restricted to 180kmh (112 mph) so you'll either need a speedo convertor to move it to 180mph(so its not a problem) or get a modified cdi (think it was brooky on here that did them!)

I've been lobbying (read: whinging at) the Thunderbikes people to allow 4/6s to race with them, which would give an outlet for a home-brewed moto2 effort because at the minute there's nowhere to race a hybrid bike except open classes which is full of new proddy 600s and 1000s.
So, if it transpires that 4/6s can race with them (the new rules are going to be released soon!) then buy a 3TJ, sell the engine if it's a runner and buy a complete 4JH 600. Build a 4/6, sell off the remains of the 600 to recoup some costs and you have a jolly nice little budget moto2 bike for less than £1000
If you add nice forks and a decent shock, you've effectively got an early R6 for £(not very much at all really).
I'm really hoping that they'll allow hybrids in, because I'll be having a go if they do.

it could be done as a sub xxx horsepower grid, like they have at some clubs. should rule out the newer bikes. even make it carbed only? then you could run well tuned 400's and maybe some strokers to increase the grid size. make it worth their while then!

There's already a power to weight limit (1.81kg per bhp), which is a great leveller I think, but the main sticking point is you're not allowed to put an engine in a frame designed to take a smaller capacity engine.
