Hi Neosophist,
Just re-alised how radical the gearing is on this 400z, fifth gear and sixth are virtually identical revs and top speed hence the lack of top speed in sixth (and the front end been very happy to go skyward) gearbox is 100% though,I've got a feeling this was done before it was imported so a new sprocket set is on order. Thanks for all the help mate I thought the gearing was out (did'nt re-alise how much tho!) Rear upon closer inspection has got jap writing on it and just visible is "HRC" I think it's safe to say it's been geared for hooligan or track use.
Bad news is the tank has sprung a slight leak under the tap area so a strip and a sand down and inspection is going to be done on sunday, bit annoyed but I paid buttons for it
Is Liquid Steel still the best for repairing small holes?

I have sucessfully used Petseal for small holes in petrol tanks

Could be the tap itself.. it is vaccum operated by means of a rubber diaphram.. if this perforates it can leak too

As always,cheers guys for the advice,hopefully I've managed to bag an nc24 tank,side panels and seats,there is a bit of filler by my tap and I'm thinking It's been repaired.Apparently the tanks are quite prone to rust! The gearing is been changed shortly as It's getting tedious,fun yes but would suit a short circuit not the road.
Still enjoying riding it and I think I'll stick to 400's now as they do everything a big cc will do but handle more like a 250.(plus I'm a short arse!)
After the baby is born and things settle down I'll be looking for an Nc30 as a second bike.

I've got a VFR400Z and I think it's fantastic... it's a 1986 Z-G, imported in 1996:

It doesn't look like this now, though...

I got mine from an eBay seller in Bournemouth about 5 years ago... just over £500 and it was used but tidy... braided hoses, new bars and risers, and Battlaxes fitted. It had a standard fuel tap fitted for some reason, replacing the original vacuum tap. My first ride was a 220 mile trip back home...

I took it all over the country, usually at full throttle, and got an indicated 210kph on a run down to Bristol, which is quite fast enough on an unfaired bike, thank you! It didn't use any oil, and the only problems I had were a knackered reg/rec and a sticking choke that needed a garage to trace and fix.

I'd have another one tomorrow if I could.

Chrissy, I totally agree about the z,apart from remedial work that needs doing on mine I love it! It's got character, 80' s style vs function,looks like a streetfighter but without the mishmash of parts ( the amount of people who think It's a gsxr is amazing) I'm on the lookout for another one! above 90 though is too windy tho!

I used to get a lot of approving nods from other riders 'cos of it's streetfighter looks, with the twin headlamps... people thought I'd modded it myself but no, it's all standard!

They can be a bit cramped though, I'm nearly 6' tall and I have to stretch my legs out after 60 miles or so. I'm hoping the longer shock and built-up seat I've fitted will help me out...

My VFR400Z finally past its MOT (front fork leaks and new front tyre) and I've been on the road since the start of this month after the bike spending the last five years in my mate's barn. Sounds and rides great! Used GoldSeal to sort the tank out and seems to have done the trick.Image

I'm glad to see other people have been seduced by 400z's looks :) plus the stupid low price as I've gathered unless you know the vfr family people on e-bay think it's been crashed and the fairings have been binned,used epoxy as a temperary measure on my tank (tiny leak) as I think I've managed to get hold of a nc24 tank and panels at a half decent price!
