Electrical problem? ahh

Post by Chrisfizzer » Fri Mar 04, 2011 10:13 am

Hi ive had my Fzr 400 exup for about a week now and as it has no fuel gage I was riding home & it ran out of petrol I managed to fill up the next day & the battery was dead as a dodo, I managed to bump it and it was juddering wouldnt ride properly, kept cutting out when I touch the breaks, indicators or lights. Ive been told its the regulator rectifier but I cant find it anywhere its not under my seat or on any side casing near the back end?!?

I've not worked through this but it's posted at the top of the 'FZR general' area in manuals. Might be worth checking through to check you battery problems. There's also a manual for download which may help locate bits, etc

edit -

Here's a page out of the manual for the rectifier location (Rectifier is #10)

it does sound like a charging circuit fault
Ok - you'll need a volt meter.

Charge the battery and take a reading across the terminals - you should get about 13v much less then the battery is dead, renew it. Connect the battery to the bike and start the engine again take a reading across the terminals at idle it should be 14.5v. now while rev the bike and if the reading goes up in spike to 16v ish then the reg rec isn't working. Check the multi connector between the reg rec and the loom if it's corroded clean it up and recheck the battery isn't over charging.

If the reading doesn't change at all when revving then turn the headlights on, if you voltage drops when you do that then it's the generator. It lives under the left side engine casing. Again trace the wiring and make sure the bolck connector is clean.
Take the casing off and have a look at the copper wire windings they might look burnt or damaged but then again they might not. You can either send it off to Westcountry Windings to be rewound or replace it secondhand (no garantee it's good), be careful when you install the replacement generator don't trap any wires etc although it's a fairly straight swap.

Check you haven't blown any fuses or bulbs before you ride the bike again.

Hi thanks for replying, Since I posted this I found the old Regulator it was quite rusty cleaned it up, But as I had to take the tank off there was I (think!) A generator or stator Im not too sure id had two wires hanging out & there was two more hanging out somewhere else so I joined them together, but before I did this the bike wouldnt bump start is this because the battery is too flat?

Were the wires you joined together matching colours?

If the battery is completely flat it may not be enough for the fuel pump to pressurise, which I would imagine makes bumping the bike harder. Have you got a battery charger?

No but they was the only place they could go as I didnt see them loose before I took the tank off & yes I have a charger
