Calipers/Pistons

Post by porndoguk »

im currently onto the job of resolving (well trying) to improve my back brake from not working and making shit to better,

i cant source the pistons cheap enough for me to warrant buying them, seeing as the back brake is rarely use,

on inspection its not hard to see why they are crap, mine are all gunked up with crap rubber dirt etc, so i thought i quickly take the piston onto the course polishing wheel, and its come up as good as new, there are a few small pits on the outside lip, which ill take the Wet & Dry too smoothen out as to not damage the dust seal on rebuild.

i have new seals and im going to give the calipers a lick of paint as the powder coaters sandblaster went i bit psychotic and has damaged the internals where the pistons are house which isnt good.

is there actually any need to ever replace a piston?

they seem salvageable, (understanderbly i damaged the last set of pistons as they were seized).

I rebuilt 1 of my rear calipers yesterday - it was siezed solid. i ground down (tappered) the edge of 1 of my snap-on 16mm sockets (it was the only 1 that nearly fit) banged it into the piston & then attached an extension bar & wound them out, sounds easy but it was fooking hard work.
Anyway, on removal, the pistons were just as you discribed, fine but on the outer lip, slight pitting.
I got the brasso out, cleaned them, then polished off the pits as best as possible.
The pistons were fine, i put in the new seals etc & got it back on, no leaks or problems.

On the other hand, my other rear caliper is bolloxed, on removing the pistons, they looked like they had come from the bottom of the sea - so its all been binned.
I suppose it depends where the caliper has been, my knackered 1 has been on a bike thats sat in a garden for 11 years unused.
