Wheel powdercoating questions

Post by Johnny Wishbone » Sun Aug 22, 2010 7:33 pm

As per title, how did you prep your wheels for powder coating. Specifically I am thinking of NC30 wheels.

Did you remove the bearings and what about the threads for the brake disc bolts. I was going to leave my bolts in and replace them for stainless ones.

Oh and if you removed your wheel bearings, how did you get them out? I don't have a drift or anything similar.

get the tyres off, discs, tyre valves and weights off and use a smalle flat bladed screwdriver to pop the bearings out. take the disc bolts with you when you take them to be coated and ask the person there whether they will need them fitted or not, if they only cover the threads a little you might be able to use a tap and clean them up afterwards :)

Thats reminded me, how do you get the tyre valves off? I got my mate to take the tyres off ages ago but the valves are still on!

Do it like the trade and cut them out. I thought about pulling them through but 10 seconds later they were both out 8-)

If you take the tyre off you'll see how to get the valves out, it's probably a good idea when there out to make a proper job of things and get one of these...

Right Angle valve.. makes blowing them up on the bike a damn sight easier and will only cost a few quid.

You can make a drift to knock the bearings out with anything that fits.. a socket etc. Getting the one side out first can be tricky, poke something through the hole and tap the edges.

Be very careful if you plan on re-using the bearings.. but for the sake of less the £10, it's worth while to replace them.

Take any balancing weights off.

Screw bolts into the disc threads.

Depending on where your taking what your having done you can get them acid dipped / blasted / filled / resurfaced before you have them coated.

Depends on your budget :-)

+1 on what Neo said.
I've got a set already stripped down going to this place soon http://www.powder-coatings.ltd.uk/motor.php
Just got a bit of prepping to smooth down a scuffed rim.
New bearings and seals ready, still looking for a rear stainless nut though

Ah powder coatings are good, there only 10 minute drive from where I work. They can do a let of pre-prep and treatment for you.

I don't think they off an alloy wheel 'refurb' service, just standard powdercoating.
Remove any surplus grease or oil from the frame or inside the headstock or swinging arm. Any bearing surfaces such as headstock area, swinging arm bushes or wheel bearing need to be masked to prevent the shotblasting process roughening them. This can be achieved with two large discs of metal or washers and a length of allthread.

Mask all external threads with 6 turns of masking tape Blank off internal threads using old bolts. Ensure that the swinging arm, centre stand, side frame and headstock are detached from the frame.
The all-thread / washer idea is good for the wheels too, if you get a spindle through the wheel and bolt two large washers each side it'll protect your bearing surface.

Shouldnt a decent powder coaters mask bearing faces and protect the threads anyway? The place i get my powder coating done does and last time i looked charged £50 a set. All they ask is that you remove the bearings, sprokets etc and give it a degrease

Maybe it depends on the place, i think most places will but if you mask the stuff off then I guess its your responsibility that you've done it properly? Only thing that comes to mind.

Powedercoatings in bham do a great job with stuff, they've done motorcycle bits for over 20 years.

Best to give them a call
