Inlet camshaft snapped
Hi, hope someone can help.
I managed to snap the inlet cam on my NC29 after checking and changing the valve clearances, I pressume the gear wasn't engaged when tightening it down.
What options do I have, I'll only be using the bike on trackdays, the engine is standard apart from K&N filter and race exhaust:
- will the NC23 inlet cam fit, is it the same profile?
- will I need to do anything with the bearing journals?
- is there a Kent or Piper cam upgrade?
- does anyone have a spare cam they want a good home for?
Any info would be appreciated
Cheers

Re: Inlet camshaft snapped
Real easy mistake this - the NC23 cam is different BTW - we have good used standard NC29 cams in stock.

Re: Inlet camshaft snapped
I'll share my technique for not busting the cam.
I hold the cam in place with one hand, twisting i against the tensioning gears a little so it doesn't rotate while it is being tightened. It keeps it in position and stops it from moving and wedging across the drive gears as you torgue it down. You can see the gears are meshing if you look through from the right hand side in front of the frame.
With the other hand I start to progressively tighten the cam retainers. Once there is some 'bite' or overlap of the gears I let it go and place a flat bladed screw driver against the teeth, if you twist the screwdriver against the gears you will see the tension gear move and come into line with the fixed gear, so you know the tensioner is not locked across teeth on the cam drive, and you should be able to rock the cam slightly as well, indicating it is not locked across the drive gear teeth as well. If all is free I tighten it down. If not back off the bolts and start again.
I dunno if that will help anyone, but its what I do - after snapping a tensioner gear and breaking half a dozen teeth from torquing one down in the early years of NC29 ownerhsip.

Re: Inlet camshaft snapped
I answer to the first question & not just to make a sale.
The NC23 cam is differant (gear has larger teeth & there fore will not mesh with cam gear drive assy). If you could press off the gear ( & you can do this) & swap it over , though you would have to bloody good at it so it goes back in the right place as there are no marks to line it up with, then the cam shaft would bolt straight in, lobes & journals all same, Kent do a cam for it though these are reground originals you send in your own, not sure if they can supply complete cam & as for the fitting so as not to bust it. just read the post above as it seems to be as good a way of doing it as any.
