Project NC29 spangly bastard!

Post by tanuki » Thu Mar 31, 2011 8:25 pm

Right chaps here we have project spangly bastard, as the NSR has now been sold I no longer have a road bike and for the odd occasion I would like to ride on the road I am going to daytime MOT my trackbike but before I can do that I need to do some stuff.

The bike as it stands looks like this:

And it doesn't have that bad a spec:

Maxton front and rear sussies
HRC CDI
Beet full system
Ramair
SES rearsets and clipons
And a number of other racy sundries.

This was the engine that used to be in the bike:

Image

RVF pistons
Total loss
Quietning gears removed
Skimmed polished and ported head

And I learnt a hard lesson, don't forget to swap the water in your cooling system for antifreeze before winter, basically it's fucked but still has a fair bit of good salvageable bits.

Soooooo the plan for the bike is this, reframe the bike with a frame with a V5, this I have already scourced but will need powdercoating, alloy subframe that will take a CBR600 tail unit again yeurman from this very forum has said he will lend me his to get it copied, fit the RVF maxton forks I already have and am in the process of getting the stems swapped and basically lube and clean everything else.

I have just scourced another engine so I can send the head off and get the porting and skim copied while that is being done the motor will be totally stripped and the casings will be vapour blasted before being rebuilt with all the internals from the fucked engine so I will basically end up with the same motor except I won't be running total loss as I want to daytime MOT it.

Other plans are to swap my airbox for a proper HRC ram air jobbie and hopefully depending on clearance fit the ZXR400 rad i have, mini lightweight battery, quick release projector headlamp and quick release numberplate hanger/rear light (I want them easily removable firstly for trackdays and secondly it's easier to daytime MOT a bike with no lights at all). There are also a few bits I want like one of spikes QATs and some sort of digi dash, it's also going to need painting.

So there you have it project spangly bastard is starting and I promise to post loads of pics as I travel my spangly journey.

I don't expect to get close to finishing this bike before this time next year because I want to do a few trackdays as it is at the moment but stuff will be happening.

Dodgy bobs then

I was told it's needed for millage records, saying that tho the last 2 bikes I've mot'd both had digital dashes showing zero miles and 1 of them was a daytime only.

Gave the calipers a good clean up today, didn't go mad splitting them or anything as these are being used only until I get some SP1 brakes at a decent price.

Image

They look better and the pistons are in really good condition but how do you get them to look black again as they are a bit greyish.

Image

MMMMMMMaxton forks nomnomnom!!

Image

Some chunky SES clipons for the above, just need a clean up.

Image

Some of you have seen this, nice as it's the real deal from Tenkate but it's going to get chopped about, gotta keep that seat pad in one piece though!

Image

And finally the difference between a NC29 radiator and a ZXR4, I really hope there is enough clearance to fit this.

bit of an update on the bike, I've given up waiting for my yokes to be done so that I can fit my RVF forks before Anglesea so I have decided to just prep the bike ready for that.

I do have a few updates though the first being this:

Image
o
HRC Ramair box....ok its still in the box but I will get some proper pics soon.

Image

My new to me e bay bargain Micron

and here we have the heads, the one in the top pic has been polished, ported and skimmed but alas is fucked, the one in the bottom pic is from the standard engine i have bought and is going to be copied, I put the pics close together so that you may just be able to see the difference in the porting.

Image
Image

thats all for now hoping to get the airbox built this week so I'll post some pics of that when I can.

more stuff...

decided to tackle the HRC airbox so here we go..

standard airbox lid with the scoops cut out:

Image

HRC airbox stuff

Image

then out with the trusty rip off Dremmel

Image

and we have holes, this was pretty tricky as the scoop is obviously a copy of the real HRC job but I guess over the years the mould has scewed slightly meaning things dont quite line up.

Image

Holes done scoop mocked into place with gaffa

Image

BIG!!

Image

you can see in this pic the standard holes I am using for my ram air at the moment

Image

SCOOOOOOOPY!!!!!

Image

Image

It fits and because of the scoop I am using now my Rad is already lowered, tomorrrow will consist of me sealing the scoop where they attatch to the lid and relocating the coils to the frame...
