engine id

Post by edd90 » Mon Jan 28, 2013 7:28 pm

Hi there, could anyone shed any light on the identity of the engine in my bike. The bike itself is a zx4g. When i bought the bike the previous owner said he put an engine from an l model cos the old one blew its head gasket. Now if it is an"L" engine why does the engine number start zx400g. I know a guy who owns a h model and his engine no. Also starts zx400g. He said that code ran on to the h model. After reading one of the earlier posts on this forum i learned that h models have equally spaced ratios in the gearbox, where as on my bike 4th,5th and 6th are closer togather than the rest. Any help on this would be gratefully received cheers. Edd

old post, but heregoes
id checker - in japanese but easy to figure out
http://www.kawasaki-motors.com/for_user ... /index.jsp

gear ratios for zxr400 H models (not J-spec) are:-
primary-2.1951
1st-37/13-2.846
2nd-37/18-2.055
3rd-31/19-1.632
4th-29/21-1.381
5th-31/25-1.24
6th-30/27-1.111
final-15/45-3

gear ratios for zxr400 L models (not M-spec) are:-
primary-2.1951
1st-37/13-2.846
2nd-38/19-2
3rd-30/19-1.578
4th-29/22-1.318
5th-30/25-1.2
6th-30/27-1.111
final-15/45-3

so the H gearing is more acceleration orientated than the L through gears 2-5.

I think the OP was referring to the earlier zx4 series bikes like the one below.

the OP also said he thought he might have a later L model engine in his zx4g frame, and asked what the gear ratios were.

im not sure, but if its possible to put an L model cylinder onto the older crankcases then he might have a franken-engine with older transmission and a newer head.

the older, pre 1989 zx4's had cylinders with fins, all the later ones are smooth metal...that will show you if its a zxr400 or a zx4
