Try putting a wooden broom handle down the fork tubes to hold the guts of the fork still while you undo the bolt.

The best way is to get a bit of threaded rod (18mm or 20mm, i can't remember off hand) about 3 foot long and 4 nuts to fit. The nuts need to fit into a 24mm spanner, iirc.
Lock 2 nuts onto each end of the treaded rod.
Stick the treaded rod and nuts down the fork tube and it will hold the guts of the fork while you undo the bolt.

Hope this helps.
I only please one person per day.
Today is not your day, tomorrow isn't looking good either.

the other option is to keep the spring in, clamp the fork in a vice, get a mate to compress the spring and go at it with the dugga dugga gun! just an idea cos you may have access to one at work????

I made the 'screwed rod and nut' tool... Can't beat it IMO

It worked great, took about 5mins to knock up once i had the parts, and is sitting there ready for the next time i need it :)
