1WG Inlet manifolds on a 3TJ ?

Post by ArronA » Tue Sep 06, 2016 9:01 am

Hi people

The inlet rubber manifolds on my 3TJ are cracked around the top quite badly, when i had the bike fired up it had a really strong smell of fuel and i could see it weeping from the manifolds, i can't seem to find any replacements for the 3TJ anywhere but the 1WG ones are available from a few sellers on eBay, has anyone tried this? i know there is around 15mm give or take in the over all height between them and the 1wg manifolds are slightly slanted and marked L L & R R as apposed to the more shorter not slanted 3tj ones that are marked 1, 2, 3, & 4

I think the 1wg ones are a better design as there is less rubber that can crack and go bad but I'm unsure weather if i get some and fit them my airbox might be bumped up higher and sit differently meaning that the fuel take won't seat correctly

Any suggestions? Thanks!

This is the standard work around solution to the NLA 3TJ units.
Quite a few members have gone down this route.
They raise the air box a very slight amount..5mm IIRC but not enough to prevent the tank cover fitting correctly.

Check prices with CMSL and factor in carriage...they MAY beat Ebay vendors.

Pretty sure Drunk'n Monkey will spot this thread....he was eventually convinced to do it this way after numerous other options failed.

Southend Chris was the originator of fitting these I believe.

So it's a straight switch over with no modifying ? and the slant on the 1wg inlets don't make anything clash with anything ? (sorry to sound dumb but what does NLA stand for?) i have been thinking about buying a set of 1wg inlets for ages but I was worried about buying them and then finding out they won't go on or cause complications or something because i don't really have enough money to waste lol

I guess both the L manifolds go on cylinder 1 & 2 and the R ones go on cylinder 3 & 4 ? also do they just need to be any 1wg inlets or do they need to be 1wg ones from a particular year ? (sorry for all the questions!)

Thanks for the reply i really appreciate the advice

Also my oil light doesn't go out although I've drained and replaced the old oil and filter and filled it up to the correct number that is on the side of the engine casing (can't remember what it was off he top of my head, 2600 or 2900ml or something)

That might be a short on the oil circuit .. the oil pressure switch / sender is buggered

Pressure switch or level warning lamp on a 3TJ Boris ?
All pre 3TJ,s are level indicators I do know.

O.P > find the switch, uncouple the wire...if the lamp goes out it is a switch fault , if it stays on the wiring for that circuit is earthing out. This is for level switches.

For pressure switches... uncouple and then earth the wiring to test the switch. The oil pressure keeps the switch open and the lamp unlit.
