FZR400 / 600 3EN2 Questions

Post by hardhat_harry » Sat Jun 13, 2015 12:43 am

Hi all

Just purchased a very sad and crusty looking 3EN2 with an early FZR600 conversion.

It looks to have the 3TJ swingarm fitted

As it has an 18" wheel I want to ditch this and fit a 17" whats the options on donor rear wheels?

Also the radiator is a piddling little thing (I think its the 400 one) with an oil cooler underneath and the fan fitted in front of the rad not behind, has anyone fitted much bigger thinner radiators / thinner fans?

This will also be a track bike as well as a run around so the 17" wheel and bigger rad is deffo needed

This is what it used to look like but now its rather shonky looking

Image

The R6 rear seat and fairing is stuck on some square box frame that looks terrible so that will be going I will be on the lookout for a rear 3EN2 subframe at some point and proper seat plastics / seat

Even this picture makes it look alot better than it is, this weekend I will be mostly getting it going, fingers crossed the engine is good.

Hi Harry,
It looks like the swingarm is standard 3en2 - it looks similar to the 3tj but runs the 18" wheel & the overslung rear caliper. The 3tj as you guessed runs a 17" rear wheel & has an underslung caliper, its also cast with 3tj on the top of the arm behind the rear brake master cylinder. 3tj rear ends are a viable swap (finding 1 for a reasonable cost is the problem), talk to kayla on this forum - she has done quite a few swaps inc engine 4/6's, shocks, etc. Good luck. 8-)

The rad will be from either the original early 600 3HE unit that had the cooler or an SP 2TK ( both the same unit)
No reason for the fan to be infront of the rad though.

You may find that a fan is not required at all.
It usually only comes into operation in stationary traffic and city stop/start conditions.
Once moving at a good pace;the airflow through a rad far exceeds that of which any fan could sustain.

A curved rad from a Kawasaki zxr 400 without the fan was the accepted upgrade for the fzr under TT conditions when the class was still run.

Kayla usually recommends the rear end from a try, fzr600r foxeye or Thundercat as a cheaper viable mod. You'll probably want better forks and a 3.5 wide front to fit a 120 tyre too.

+1 on the TRX 850 arm and wheel.(Ally s/a and nice adjusters + bobbin mounts)
Kayla did one on mine.......mint.

I don't recommend the 4Jh (600 foxeye) s/a.......steel,rusty as fook and weigh a ton.....cheap is the only saving grace.
(Can you tell I'm on refurbing one at the present ?)

I cannot remember if the 4JH and TRX wheels are identical, I think so...if you want to economise......people give 4JH wheels away.

Got her running today no nasty noises.

What should the temp gauge show when idling?

The thermostat housing has 1wg stamped on it, does this suggest a 400 rad setup?

It does indeed.

I searched for the 89 3HE thermo top part no. but shows as NLA on the site I use....cmsl ...and as such the part no.is not shown.

At idle ; both mine take forever to get to 3/4 scale on the gauge.
It has to be an extremely hot day for the fan to engage when in the garage.

The 600 and 400 cooling system should be similar unless the 600 has an oil cooler or oil warmer.
Overheating might be a head gasket, check if the oil looks slightly grey with scum on the filler cap and if the rad has brown scum too.

I think he is suffering from overcooling !

With the 89 3HE engine and the rad/oilcooler it wont get the needle up the gauge past 2/3 unless its running a very
weak mixture.

The oil cooler assy was deleted on later models as superfluous.

It's running pods so unless they have changed the jets the mix will be weak, something more to consider.

Not seeing the normal symptoms of head gasket failure.
