FZR 400 Crank Question
Hey everyone,
I'm starting to build a 500cc engine with a turbocharger and nitrous for land speed racing. That is where the participant has from 1 mile up to 5 miles to get up to top speed.
I'm thinking of using a FZR 400 crankshaft along with FZR/YZF 600 with 62mm cylinders and head. That should net me 489cc. I'll use YZF Throttle bodies and injectors so it will be easier to control the fuel with the Garrett GT 1241 Turbo. Individual nitrous injectors will be placed between the throttle bodies and the head. I am hoping for 120 reliable horsepower from 500cc.
The questions I have are:
What is the opinion about the 400's crank holding up to 130 HP at 12500 RPM?
Are the connecting rods in the YZFs strong enough for 130HP?
Thanks to any and all who have the answers.
David

Re: FZR 400 Crank Question
Bloody hell !!!
I wish I knew the answers to this but it might be something Holeshot or TTS could advise on. One of them did a super charged 600 Fazer, which is similar to the 400 engine. You might even consider a super charger, they're easier to make a fuel map for (like I'd know

Re: FZR 400 Crank Question
Well the FZR600 crank can handle 150+ bhp
Just make sure everything is in good condition

2 cents worth
Use Carrillo rods - cheaper than a blown engine

Second hand engines aren't that expensive though.LiteTekBlair wrote:2 cents worth

If the Fazer with the supercharger used standard rods then they should be ok.
The 400's have a smaller crank oil jet which is bigger on the 600. Race engines drill out and tap for a bigger jet - it's on BDK website

Re: FZR 400 Crank Question
I have been thinking that I would have to have carrillo rods due to the piston pin in the YZF not fitting the FZR rods. It is mostly the crank I'm concerned about. Falicon has billet cranks for around 3K. A bit more than I want to spend on one item. If the 600 crank is good for 150 HP and the FZR600 and the FZR400 cranks are interchangeble then I can assume the 400 should be good to 125HP. There seems to be some differences on different models of 400s concerning the pump or alternator or something. Does anyone know what those differences are?

Re: FZR 400 Crank Question
What capacity would you get if you use a foxeye or thundercat crank,
And the 400 barrels.

Re: FZR 400 Crank Question
There are 2 basic 400's the 1wg and the 3tj.
The 600 are basically 3he and 4jh foxeye / 4tv thundercat.
The later engines are the 3tj and 4jh 4tv. Those would be the ones I'd use. The alternator is different from the early engines to the later ones and the later ones are longer on that side, based on the 600 3he / 4jh cranks
The thundercat has nikasil barrels

Re: FZR 400 Crank Question
I believe mactem to be USA based.
The 1WG series is known as the 3BF/H series over there.
They did not have ready access to the 3TJ as they were not imported at all, except privately.
Their FZR 600r (4JH) is known as the YZF 600R
By the sound of things though ; the cost of importing 3TJ parts will not deter the build.
