Hi all, hoping for a little advice...
my 1988 1wg seems to have poor battery charging.
Firstly, the battery most probably needs replacing, as Ive noticed it loses charge after a coupe of weeks if not used.
However, if I bump start the bike, it will run fine, and will have charged the battery enough to use the starter after just a few miles. But...if i use the lights it will start to miss and splutter, and eventually die.

Are the lights standard bulbs, 35w/35w.

Have you checked the wiring from the alternator, make sure the block connectors are ok and the coonnectors are clean. Use a charger on the battery then check then voltage across the terminals, you should get around 13.5v. Connect it up to the bike runthe engine and you should get 14.6v .. ish.

Thanks, will check the values of the lamps first, as they are very dim, and slow to light up/change between hi and lo.

Whilst you down there ... Check the earth cable is secure on the battery and frame

Update....
Both headlamp bulbs are 12v 60\55w, but so are the lamps on a spare headlamp.
Also, checked battery, and it is VERY low on fluid. Should I top up with rain water, and charge it, or scrap it and buy a replacement?

You should use distilled water if you're going to top up a battery but to be honest buy a new one. This sounds like its the source of your initial problem but keep an eye on it even with a new battery.
Stick a Motobatt in there that will do it, this is the cheapest I could find, you want a MB12U

Thanks for that. What about lamps, they are H4 with a black tip. Halogen? Should I be looking for same type, but 35/35?

Not yet.
The battery not having fluid in is reducing its capacity to store a charge and start the bike. The bike will run when the engine is bump started so the alternator seems OK.
The 600 3he uses a similar twin light to the 1wg ( which has probably been put in your bike) theyre OK with 60/55 bulbs
