Stanchions??

Hi, my 38mm stanchions on my FZR400 ('88 - 1wg) are pitted and just bursting new seals. I've found a pair for a 600 3HE and all I can find is conflicting opinions on whether they will fit or not? Are the 3HE stanchions 38mm or not. The guy selling them seems unsure and I'm not gonna fork out 100quid without it being definite!
Thanks in advance.
Georgie

The fork stanchions are identical; All 38mm
600 3HE ;

400 Genesis(have no parts fiche info for the 88/presumed 3EN1) but 90% sure utilise the same stanchion but later fork bottoms. ;

If your lucky the 600 legs will be post 1989 with 100mm caliper bolt spacing and a direct swap.
The 89 3HE fork bottoms have same caliper spacing lugs as the 86/87 Genesis.
Bonus is the fork springs are a bit heavier than the 400.

The later 3HE used a 298mm disk so you might have to change them if you wanted to just bolt in the forks. But the 298mm disks are common to a lot of models and aren't too expensive (about £50)

I think the discs are identical ?
He says his is 88 = 3EN1 = 4 pot calipers.
The 3EN2 uses the same discs as all the 3HEs=3HE2581T00 (superceded)

Far as I can work out; 3EN1 and 3EN2 utilise the same wheel and discs; only the forks differ in stanchion dia.
Both use the same calipers.
This is where the forum could do with a 3EN1 parts fiche link.

Thanks, that clears it up :-). If the whole fork doesn't work, then I'll just butcher them for the stanchions! **whistles on the way to ebay!**

Thanks for the definitive, Boris.
I did a bit digging about after I posted and came to that conclusion.
Yamaha certainly did a lot of fooking about with discs and calipers/forklegs in that era.
400cc
86; small discs/no offset/twin pots
87;small discs/offset/four pots
88;small discs/offset/four pots.
89;big discs/offset/fourpots.
90;change it all again !/four pots
600cc
89;big discs/offset/twin pots
90>big discs/offset/four pots.

The 400 90 or 3tj uses the same discs as the 89 3en2, these discs are very common and the same stud pattern as the 88 3en1 and Brembo 320mm superbike discs. The 298mm were last used on the 600 Fazer, although they're black hangers.
Given the opportunity I'd have used the 600 forks complete and changed the discs, theyll fit the original front wheel and you can use the original calipers.
